About the Role

The Autonomous Labs (AutoLabs) programme focuses on generating high-fidelity experimental data for foundation models. This role leads a lean team of scientists and automation specialists while remaining hands-on at the bench to design, execute, and troubleshoot experiments that drive real-world scientific breakthroughs.

Responsibilities

  • Own experimental design and wet-lab delivery for foundation model datasets.
  • Drive independent research to resolve experimental design and data generation challenges.
  • Lead, line-manage, and develop a team of laboratory scientists and automation specialists.
  • Perform hands-on wet-lab and automation work.
  • Design, execute, document, and analyze experiments on automated platforms.
  • Define and manage end-to-end data generation campaigns including scoping, scheduling, and QC.
  • Develop, optimize, and validate scientific workflows for cell culture, protein engineering, and protein purification.
  • Oversee maintenance and troubleshooting of automation platforms like liquid handlers and thermocyclers.
  • Collaborate with modeling teams to ensure data meets downstream training requirements.
  • Utilize scientific computing and programming to support and orchestrate workflows.
  • Stay current with field developments and implement new techniques or equipment.
  • Disseminate results through internal discussions, seminars, and publications.

Requirements

  • Scientific curiosity across diverse fields beyond biology.
  • PhD in an experimental field (wet-lab focus).
  • Strong hands-on experience with molecular biology workflows including cell culture, protein engineering, and protein purification.
  • Ability to interpret scientific literature and troubleshoot novel protocols.
  • Hands-on experience with automated laboratory equipment such as liquid handlers, thermocyclers, and plate handling systems.
  • Build-it-yourself attitude with a willingness to perform hands-on lab work.
  • Ability to commute to Oxford at least 2 days per week.
