About the Role
As Associate Director – Financial Control, you will lead financial control, regulatory reporting, and capital oversight for three Japan entities. This is a hands-on leadership role requiring strong technical expertise in Japan regulatory requirements, financial reporting, and capital management, combined with the ability to operate independently within a matrix organization. The role will take ownership of core financial control activities, including close, statutory and regulatory reporting, while also providing oversight across tax and broader control frameworks. A key focus will be driving operating model efficiency, automation, and process improvement across the Japan finance function. Working closely with the Japan Finance leadership team, including the Head of Finance, Japan, the role will help build a cohesive, high-performing Finance function in Japan. The role will also act as a key local interface between Japan and regional/global Finance teams, working closely with offshore teams to support delivery and ensure effective coordination across the broader Finance organization. The successful candidate will be a proactive, delivery-focused leader, capable of managing offshore teams, navigating complex regulatory and tax environments, and confidently engaging with senior stakeholders and Boards.
Responsibilities
- Lead financial close, year-end and regulatory reporting processes, ensuring full compliance with regulatory requirements for the Japan entities.
- Oversee statutory reporting under JGAAP and ensure alignment with IFRS/US GAAP.
- Manage external audit and regulatory interactions.
- Act as a key local point of contact for financial control and accounting matters, supporting Japan stakeholders and coordinating with regional and global teams.
- Monitor and manage regulatory capital and liquidity requirements.
- Ensure entities remain appropriately capitalised.
- Provide clear reporting and insight to senior management and Boards.
- Drive efficiency, automation and process improvement across all financial control activities.
- Leverage automation and digital tools to reduce manual processes and enhance control.
- Evaluate and implement changes to resource model where appropriate.
- Provide guidance on complex regulatory, accounting and financial control matters.
- Ensure strong internal controls across all areas of financial control.
- Maintain audit readiness and proactively manage risk.
- Act as Japan Finance lead for tax matters, in partnership with the Tax team.
- Review and challenge tax outputs and ensure alignment with financial reporting.
- Provide local insight and manage tax risk.
- Work closely with the Japan leadership team, including the Head of Finance, Japan, and partner across the broader Finance organisation.
- Operate within a matrix structure, with functional alignment to APAC Financial Control and local alignment in Japan.
- Collaborate closely with offshore teams (including Dalian and India) to deliver financial control activities.
- Serve as a key interface between Japan and regional/global Finance teams, ensuring effective coordination and support for local stakeholders.
- Operate independently with offshore leadership.
- Present to senior stakeholders and Boards.
- Communicate complex matters clearly in English and Japanese.
Requirements
- Significant financial control experience in Japan within a regulated environment.
- Strong knowledge of FSA requirements, including regulatory reporting obligations.
- Experience overseeing regulatory reporting processes for licensed entities.
- Strong understanding of capital and liquidity frameworks.
- Technical expertise in JGAAP, with working knowledge of IFRS and US GAAP.
- Working knowledge of the Japan tax regime, with experience working with Tax teams and advisors.
- Proven track record of operating model transformation and efficiency delivery.
- Experience managing offshore teams in a matrix structure.
- Ability to act as a key local representative for financial control, working across global and regional teams.
- Hands-on, proactive and able to operate independently.
- Excellent communication skills in English and Japanese (essential).
- Ability to explain complex regulatory, tax and financial matters clearly to senior stakeholders.
- Strong execution focus with attention to detail.
- Commercial mindset with a focus on efficiency and value-add.
- High levels of ownership and accountability.
