About the Role

The Senior Staff Attorney will support the Economic Justice Program’s Legal Services for Entrepreneurs (LSE) Project and the Protecting Racial Equity (PRE) Initiative. This role is critical to building community wealth by providing free legal services to low-income entrepreneurs serving marginalized communities and advising nonprofits on racial equity programming. The attorney will play a leading role in addressing the commercial leasing needs of a high volume of marginalized commercial tenants.

Responsibilities

Provide direct representation and limited-scope services to low-income and other small businesses on commercial leasing legal issues.
Engage in pre-litigation negotiations, advise clients, draft legal documents, and negotiate settlement agreements.
Review unlawful detainer notices and court filings, and advise pro per commercial tenants.
Maintain accurate client work files and documentation.
Coordinate and conduct potential client intake interviews.
Participate in legal clinics, providing advice and supervising pro bono attorneys.
Develop and deliver "Know Your Rights" trainings.
Participate in advice and counsel clinics for nonprofits seeking racial equity programming review.
Train, supervise, and onboard staff, law clerks, and volunteers.
Ensure efficient and effective service delivery processes.
Assist with grant compliance and reporting.
Perform other tasks as assigned, potentially including evening and weekend work.

Requirements

J.D. and active membership in good standing of the California Bar.
Minimum of five years of legal experience, including direct representation of businesses in transactional matters.
Demonstrated experience and leadership in community economic development.
Prior experience working with low-income communities of color and immigrant communities.
Minimum of one year of project management experience.
Excellent organizational, communication, analytical, writing, and editing skills.
Strong attention to detail.
Experience with Microsoft products, Adobe Acrobat, case management tools (e.g., LegalServer), and contact management tools (e.g., Salesforce).
Ability to relate to and communicate respectfully with diverse clients and colleagues.
Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
Ability to set and carry out objectives with minimal supervision.
Ability to think strategically and creatively, solve problems, and exercise initiative.
Ability to manage multiple tasks and sensitive information.
Knowledge of and commitment to the mission and goals of LCCRSF and the Economic Justice Program.
