About the Role

The Public Safety Telecommunicator is a highly skilled team member, providing a vital link between state Troopers and the information they need to be effective and efficient. They are the initial first responders, taking calls and dispatching emergency personnel including state and local police, fire, and ambulatory services.

Responsibilities

  • Answer radio and telephone calls (including 911 in designated areas)
  • Gather and relay pertinent information from each communication, dispatching calls to police and other emergency management personnel
  • Provide pre-arrival instructions during medical emergencies
  • Operate the Computer Aided Dispatching system (CAD)
  • Utilize law enforcement systems nationwide to assist troopers and detectives with investigations
  • Train entry level telecommunicators on radio room policies and procedures
  • Ensure stolen and lost property, missing and wanted persons, and domestic violence records are accurate in the National Crime Information Center system
  • Perform routine computer backup and file maintenance for the radio room

Requirements

  • Must be currently certified as a Telecommunicator by the Kentucky Law Enforcement Council (KLEC)
  • Must be currently certified as a LINK/NCIC operator
  • Shall not have been convicted of a felony or other crimes pursuant to KRS 15.540
  • Must maintain any required licensure(s), certifications(s), or other credentials for the length of employment
  • Must have three years of experience in the transmission, receiving and relaying of electronic information for law enforcement, emergency medical, fire, emergency management, military communications, or traffic operations
  • College will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis up to a maximum of two years
  • Additional experience will substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis
  • Must provide documentation of successful certification as a LINK/NCIC operator within thirty days of employment
  • Must provide documentation of successful certification as an Emergency Medical Dispatcher within sixty days of employment
