About the Role

The Associate State Director of Advocacy and Community Engagement develops and executes state, federal, and local advocacy activities. This role represents the organization and its interests to elected officials, government agencies, and partner organizations, while leading state-level implementation of national campaign efforts and managing volunteer teams to advance advocacy and outreach goals.

Responsibilities

  • Identifies public policy and organizational issues, developing and implementing advocacy strategies at local, state, and federal levels.
  • Collaborates with internal/external partners on advocacy campaign communication strategy development.
  • Utilizes direct action organizing tactics and grassroots advocacy tools to build constituent support.
  • Works with staff, volunteers, and teams to achieve community engagement goals, establishing organizational presence in targeted communities.
  • Represents the organization to government agencies and media, building and maintaining relationships with governmental representatives.
  • Develops and communicates persuasive narratives aligned with organizational priorities to diverse audiences.
  • Serves as a subject-matter expert on advocacy issues, producing reports and convening meetings to disseminate findings.
  • Recruits, trains, develops, and deploys volunteers in accordance with organizational goals.
  • Supports volunteer needs and designs opportunities to maximize engagement, ensuring inclusion of volunteer perspectives in strategic planning.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree and a minimum of 5 years of experience.
  • Proven experience building relationships and influence with Texas legislative and policy leaders.
  • Commitment to nonpartisanship with experience in lobbying, coalition and relationship building, and using grassroots techniques with the Texas legislature.
  • Experience developing and executing campaign tactics to promote issues related to AARP’s social mission.
  • Ability to develop both short- and long-term strategies and tactical plans for legislative advocacy and grassroots campaigns.
  • Experience recruiting, engaging, and managing volunteer activists with a demonstrated commitment to empowering volunteers.
  • Willingness to travel up to 50%, with flexibility for evening and weekend engagements.
  • Ability to lead and manage multiple issues and/or projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to function in a Matrix Management atmosphere.
  • Ability to work and thrive in a collaborative team environment, functioning effectively in an ambiguous and changing environment.
  • Comfort with the Microsoft Office suite, internal reporting systems, and willingness to learn new functionality.
  • Regular and reliable job attendance.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Exhibit respect and understanding of others to maintain professional relationships.
  • Independent judgement in evaluation options to make sound decisions.
  • Ability to work effectively in an in-office/open office environment with moderate noise.
  • Ability to occasionally lift up to 25 pounds.
  • Ability to work effectively in a home office environment with moderate noise.
