About the Role

The Associate Counsel, Player Matters will assist the Legal Department in handling matters related to NBA players, the collective bargaining agreement (CBA), and game administration, with a focus on analyzing, advising on, and supporting the process for determining Basketball Related Income (BRI) under the CBA.

Responsibilities

• Provide support for the annual process of auditing league and team revenues and expenses for BRI determination, analyzing memoranda from outside auditors.
• Offer BRI-related interpretive guidance to league personnel for business transactions and initiatives.
• Support arbitrations or disputes related to BRI determination.
• Administer and enforce NBA rules, including assisting with processes for trades, the NBA Draft, and player contract management.
• Advise league and team personnel regarding the CBA.
• Draft memos to NBA teams concerning BRI, the Salary Cap, and player matters.
• Assist with NBA rules enforcement, including investigations and communications.
• Support the legal team on all matters related to collective bargaining with the NBPA.

Requirements

• J.D. and admission to practice in the State of New York.
• 3+ years of legal experience, including experience at a law firm or in-house legal department.

Skills

• Excellent record of academic and professional achievement.
• Outstanding analytical, writing, and oral presentation skills.
• Facility with financial matters and accounting principles preferred.
• Strong knowledge of the game of basketball and the NBA preferred.
• Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced work environment with competing demands.
