About the Role
This position is for the Head of Healthcare Economics & Market Access (HEMA) for DePuy Synthes Japan, responsible for leading the establishment and strategy of the HEMA function within the Japanese healthcare system. The role aims to achieve sustainable patient access and business growth for the DePuy Synthes product portfolio by integrating health economics, reimbursement, and evidence strategies.
Responsibilities
- Establish and lead the HEMA function and organization in Japan.
- Develop and execute mid-to-long-term market access strategies aligned with business objectives.
- Serve as the final responsible person for market access in Japan.
- Build internal HEMA processes, governance, and capabilities.
- Develop and execute reimbursement strategies for new and existing products.
- Lead reimbursement projects, including new listing applications and pricing management.
- Oversee application documents and evidence packages for reimbursement.
- Lead negotiations and communication with the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW) and related organizations.
- Analyze impacts of healthcare policy revisions and lead implementation strategies.
- Develop health economics and evidence strategies to support reimbursement and value propositions.
- Oversee health economic evaluations, including cost-effectiveness and budget impact analyses.
- Drive evidence generation strategies, including Real World Data (RWD) and database studies.
- Build relationships with academic societies, Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs), industry associations, and government stakeholders.
- Shape a favorable market access environment through evidence-based value propositions.
- Participate in industry activities and forums related to health economics and reimbursement.
- Collaborate closely with Commercial, Marketing, Medical, Regulatory, Clinical, and Finance departments.
- Contribute HEMA perspectives to product strategy, launch plans, and lifecycle management.
- Educate internal stakeholders on the Japanese medical device reimbursement system and policy trends.
- Manage team organization, talent development, and performance.
- Oversee external vendors and consultants for health economic analysis and reimbursement support.
- Optimize project prioritization and resource allocation.
Requirements
- Deep understanding of the Japanese healthcare system, reimbursement, and pricing.
- Ability to build strategies based on health economics and evidence.
- Leadership in environments with high uncertainty (new company/organization).
- Influence without authority and excellent stakeholder management skills.
- Logical and persuasive communication skills in both Japanese and English.

Experience Level

- Approximately 7+ years of professional experience in the medical device, pharmaceutical, or healthcare industry.
- Practical experience in market access/reimbursement in Japan.
- Experience leading government affairs (MHLW, etc.) and reimbursement projects.
- Organizational or functional management experience is a plus.
Education Level
- Bachelor's degree in medicine, pharmacy, public health, health economics, or a science-related field.
- Master's degree, MBA, or PhD is a plus.
