About the Role

Coast is seeking a leader for its data engineering team to shape the company's data culture and infrastructure. This role involves driving the evolution of a modern, cloud-native data platform, leading a high-leverage team, and building systems for risk understanding, customer acquisition, and financial product enhancement. The position requires establishing a vision for data ecosystem evolution while meeting the demands of a rapidly growing startup.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design and implementation of all aspects of the data ecosystem, from third-party data acquisition to data product development, infrastructure architecture, and end-user BI and data exploration toolchains.
  • Evangelize and implement best practices, including statistical significance reasoning, AI-driven data access, source control, change management, and database migrations.
  • Establish guardrails for a self-serve data ecosystem for business users.
  • Assist product engineering teams in evolving from treating data as exhaust to building DDD-based data products.
  • Enhance ETL/ELT patterns, covering landing zones to semantic layers.
  • Ensure metrics are built on consistent, curated data with clear stewardship.
  • Oversee the connected SaaS data landscape.
  • Own the budget for data infrastructure and develop a cost allocation model.
  • Safeguard data through tokenization, access controls, retention, and backups.
  • Maintain a pragmatic approach, balancing daily startup demands with the needs of a well-managed platform.
  • Continuously identify and implement improvements to data infrastructure.

Requirements

  • 7-10+ years of hands-on experience across the data ecosystem, including modern ETL/ELT, orchestration, data warehouses, columnar stores, BI tooling, and SQL optimization.
  • Possess a software engineering mindset, adhering to principles of source control, infrastructure as code, testing, modularity, automation, CICD, and observability.
  • Bring a strong professional network to tap for advice.
  • Experience working directly with product engineers and business users.
  • Proficiency in Python for contributing to product engineering code and writing tools.
  • Ability to independently research, design, implement, and deliver solutions through responsible change management.
  • Demonstrate an owner mindset, continuously seeking and implementing improvements to data infrastructure.
  • Act as a thought leader, staying current with industry trends and vendor landscapes.
  • Work from the NYC SoHo office at least four days a week.
