About the Role
Ibotta is seeking a software-focused Data Engineer to join the Data Intelligence Squad within the Data Platform Organization. This role is crucial for making Ibotta's data AI-ready by focusing on data contracts, metadata standards, compliance tooling, and AI readiness scoring systems. The position offers opportunities for growth into LLM application development and semantic layer work.
Responsibilities
- Implement and maintain data contract specifications, enforcing standards through automated validation.
- Collaborate with data owners to improve metadata coverage.
- Contribute to an automated scoring pipeline that evaluates data assets for AI and analytical readiness.
- Build and maintain jobs that collect quality signals and surface scores.
- Support the discovery and classification of sensitive data.
- Maintain tagging and lineage automation frameworks.
- Help translate data access and privacy policies into practical guardrails.
- Monitor AI usage across the company and define new avenues for AI assistance.
- Build systems to ensure trust in AI-generated data insights, including query accuracy checks and guardrails.
- Implement monitoring to catch problems before they erode confidence.
- Build and maintain the semantic framework to make data assets more legible to people and AI systems.
- Add descriptions, context, and query guidance to improve natural language query accuracy.
- Work with analysts and domain experts to formalize business definitions.
- Proactively leverage AI tools to accelerate development and maintain code quality.
- Partner with adjacent teams to onboard data assets into the AI-ready platform.
- Document processes and contribute to the team's shared knowledge base.

Requirements
- 3+ years of software engineering experience with a focus on data engineering, analytics engineering, or backend development.
- Proficiency in Python and SQL.
- Knowledge of Databricks.
- Familiarity with medallion architecture or similar layered data design patterns.
- Experience implementing semantic layers.
- Understanding of data governance concepts (metadata standards, data ownership, schema enforcement, access control).
- Experience keeping data assets clean and well-documented.
- Experience with schema validation, data freshness monitoring, data observability tooling, or similar quality practices.
- Experience using and/or building LLMs, NQLs, and other AI-related toolings.
- Proficiency in AI-assisted coding platforms (Claude, Copilot, Cursor, etc.) is a plus.
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
- Experience with data catalog, metadata management, or data transformation tooling is a strong plus.
- Exposure to data privacy, classification, or compliance requirements in a data context is a strong plus.
- Familiarity with configuration-as-code or automated deployment workflows is a strong plus.
- Experience with data observability or data quality monitoring is a strong plus.
- Agile development experience is a strong plus.
- Must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis.
- Responsible for the secure handling of data, identifying phishing attempts, and reporting security incidents.
