About the Role

We are transitioning to a Google Cloud-centric, AI-driven organization utilizing BigQuery, dbt, Vertex AI, and Glean. This role will lead a distributed team of Data Scientists, owning the design and deployment of production-grade ML models and AI agents on BigQuery + Vertex, focusing on business productivity and automated decision-making.

Responsibilities

• Define and execute a Data Science & AI roadmap integrating LLMs, GenAI, and classical ML into core functions.
• Partner with leaders to prioritize use cases based on impact, feasibility, and time-to-value.
• Translate platform evolution in the data + AI space into a clear plan.
• Lead the design of agentic workflows and AI copilots for monitoring KPIs, performing root-cause exploration, and delivering proactive answers.
• Build grounded, auditable, and safe agents using LLM orchestration, RAG, and Vertex/Gemini.
• Own the end-to-end lifecycle for predictive models, including problem framing, feature design, model selection, evaluation, and deployment on Vertex AI / BigQuery ML with MLOps.
• Ensure AI outputs are anchored in governed dbt models and BigQuery marts.
• Recruit, mentor, and scale a world-class DS/AI team, setting clear expectations for technical quality and business impact.
• Foster a culture of high-velocity shipping with lightweight experimentation, fast feedback loops, code reviews, reproducibility, and MLOps best practices.
• Collaborate tightly with Data Engineering & Platform, Analytics Engineering & BI, and Data Governance & Security teams.
• Act as an internal consultant to translate ambiguous business problems into tractable DS/AI solutions.
• Explain technical trade-offs, risks, and constraints in clear language to stakeholders.
• Brief stakeholders on AI possibilities, future developments, and non-viable solutions.
• Stay at the forefront of AI and LLM research and GCP platform capabilities.
• Pilot and harden innovations that can become repeatable, governed patterns for the organization.

Requirements

• 8+ years in Data Science / Machine Learning.
• 3+ years in a formal leadership role managing high-impact technical teams.
• Proven track record of taking models and AI solutions into production and delivering measurable business outcomes.
• Hands-on experience with LLM orchestration and RAG architectures.
• Experience fine-tuning or adapting foundation models for business-specific contexts.
• Broad range of statistical and ML methods across classification, regression, time-series, and uplift/propensity modeling.
• Ability to apply methods to large, messy real-world datasets and ship functional solutions.
• Significant, recent experience with Google Cloud Platform, including BigQuery and Vertex AI and/or BigQuery ML.
• Comfortable designing end-to-end solutions combining BigQuery, dbt, and Vertex/BigQuery ML.
• Strong proficiency in Python (and/or R) and SQL.
• Familiarity with common ML frameworks.
• Practical knowledge of MLOps patterns including model versioning, CI/CD, monitoring, and retraining policies.
• Experience integrating predictions and agents into production workflows and tools.
• Strong bias for action, preferring working prototypes over perfect long-term models.
• Demonstrated ability to attract, grow, and retain high-caliber DS/AI talent.
• Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment with evolving priorities.
• Ability to drive a data- and AI-informed culture across multiple functions.
