About the Role
As an Applications Engineer in Japan, you will collaborate with engineering and commercial teams to develop proposals for utility-scale BESS projects and provide technical support. A senior level will be considered for candidates with the right experience. You will analyze RFPs, create reliable and competitive solutions, and serve as the technical reference for customers throughout the early stages of contract execution.
Responsibilities
- Serve as a technical liaison for the Sales team to customers and partners, acting as an expert resource for product specifications and value engineering.
- Analyze RFPs and customer documentation to define project scope, schedule, specifications, risks, and technical requirements.
- Ensure design, equipment, and approach standardization across projects.
- Develop sizing models and conceptual drawings (e.g., Electrical single-line diagrams, site layouts) for BESS projects.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of applicable codes and standards, particularly local electrical and grid interconnection standards.
- Prepare detailed scopes of work based on client requirements.
- Specify required Balance of Plant (BOP) equipment.
- Prepare technical documentation for proposals and coordinate bid package preparation with other departments.
- Collaborate with sales, engineering, and procurement to ensure shared project understanding and priorities.
- Conduct technical presentations and provide clarifications to customers and internal departments.
- Execute technical exhibits for supply and commissioning contracts.
- Interface with customers and utilities during contract negotiations and early contract execution stages.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering (preferably Electrical); a graduate degree is strongly preferred.
- Direct experience in utility-scale battery energy storage systems and/or solar, preferably as an applications engineer with a solid understanding of inverters, transformers, RMU, PPCs, and Batteries.
- Basic knowledge of AutoCAD or related software.
- Exceptional technical aptitude, including the ability to read and understand engineering schematics, technical advisory reports, and technology reviews.
- Solid understanding of regulatory standards in the region related to energy storage and grid-interactive inverters.
- Solid understanding of monitoring and control architecture in renewable energy plants.
- Global perspective and awareness; direct experience working across diverse cultures in a multinational company is beneficial.
- Excellent time management skills, with the ability to balance multiple projects and prioritize diverse issues, initiatives, and objectives concurrently.
- Availability for travel up to 20% for customer meetings and trade show events.
- Desirable experience or understanding of electrical studies, including load flow analysis, short-circuit studies, and harmonic analysis.
