About the Role
We are seeking an Assistant Supervisor for a 15-month maternity leave contract to support the operations of our Early Learning Centre (ELC) programs. You will assist the Director in daily operations, foster a joyful and safe learning environment, guide staff, and ensure regulatory compliance for children up to age 4.
Responsibilities
- Support the Director, ELC in areas including staff recruitment and training, student supervision, policy implementation, and compliance oversight.
- Lead the Assessment for Quality Improvement (AQI) process, conduct audits, review scores, and ensure consistent standards.
- Coach and support educators, address performance gaps, and embed AQI expectations into daily practice.
- Ensure adherence to all regulations and legislated standards, including Ministry of Education Licensing, City of Toronto AQI, Toronto Public Health guidelines, and College of Early Childhood Educators Code of Ethics.
- Support change management initiatives, including implementing evolving program expectations like land-based and outdoor learning.
- Create and nurture a safe, healthy, and supportive environment for children, staff, and families.
- Review program plans to ensure a focus on learning experiences and appropriate material preparation.
- Update program, family, and community information bulletin boards.
- Take minutes at staff and Parent Advisory meetings.
- Manage physical building issues, maintenance, and problems with management approval.
- Order supplies with management approval and ensure the safe operation and timely repair of equipment.
Requirements
- Diploma or degree in Early Childhood Education.
- Member in good standing with the College of Early Childhood Educators.
- Current Standard First Aid and CPR (Level C) certification.
- Hands-on experience in a licensed childcare setting as a Coordinator, Assistant Supervisor, or an experienced ECE with leadership responsibilities.
- Direct, practical experience with the AQI framework, including participating in or leading assessments and maintaining strong scores.
- Strong understanding of early child development.
- Well-versed in key frameworks and legislation, including CCEYA (2014), AQI, ELECT, and HDLH.
- Comfortable navigating the licensing process and ensuring alignment with Ministry, City, and Public Health requirements.
- Comfortable supporting centre operations, including documentation, reporting, and systems.
- Proficient with MS Office and experience with tools like Lillio (HiMama) and Dayforce is a plus.
- Ability to step into program rooms when required to support ratios or short-term operational needs.
- Clear and intentional communication skills.
- Ability to coach, guide, and influence educators.
- Comfortable having difficult conversations and building trust with staff and families.
- Empathy, sound judgment, and a consistent, proactive approach.
