About the Role
Authorium is seeking a Design Engineer to design and ship production interfaces for government users, working independently and leveraging AI-native tooling. This role involves taking ideas from concept to polished, functional interfaces, with a focus on making complex, high-stakes government workflows navigable and efficient.
Responsibilities
- Design and build features from concept through interaction design, prototyping, and production front-end implementation.
- Write code that ships, not just specifications.
- Build and maintain interfaces in the codebase (Hotwire / Next.js), partnering with Engineering on architecture, state, and performance.
- Utilize Claude Design and other AI tooling for rapid prototyping and component development.
- Improve UX across the platform, including intake, approvals, document generation, evaluations, configuration, and reporting.
- Contribute to the design system by developing components, patterns, and libraries.
- Shape the integration of AI features into the product, ensuring AuthorAI is context-aware and trustworthy.
- Design and build for accessibility and compliance (WCAG 2.1 AA).
- Review work against design intent, maintaining fidelity and polish.
- Work in sprints, manage tasks in Jira, and participate in planning and grooming.
- Collaborate with PMs on problem framing and scope tradeoffs.
- Partner with Engineering on feasibility and front-end quality.
- Conduct user research, including usability checks and workflow observations, to inform interface improvements.
Requirements
- 2–3 years of experience building digital products with both design and front-end implementation.
- Strong front-end engineering skills, including Next.js and modern CSS.
- Experience working in a production codebase.
- Strong design craft, including interaction design, layout, and attention to detail in data-heavy interfaces.
- Demonstrated fluency with Claude Design or comparable AI design/build tools, with examples of shipped work.
- Proficiency in Figma, including components, libraries, auto-layout, and prototyping.
- Comfort with ambiguity and a bias toward shipping, making judgment calls with incomplete information.
- Ability to transition between design and code within the same day.
- Understanding of accessibility standards (WCAG 2.1 AA).
- Clear communication skills, able to explain decisions in terms of user outcomes and tradeoffs.
- Experience with dense, workflow-driven enterprise / B2B products (Nice to Have).
- Exposure to government, public sector, or regulated environments (Nice to Have).
- Experience with product analytics tools (Pendo, Mixpanel, Amplitude, or similar) (Nice to Have).
- Experience integrating AI features into a product UI (Nice to Have).
