About the Role

The Shelter Overnight Support Counsellor provides critical support to clients and staff in the Shelter, ensuring clients are safe and supported as they move towards sustainable shelter. The role requires the ability to respond effectively in the moment while understanding the impact on clients and services, navigating social and institutional systems from a client-centered and community capacity building framework.

Responsibilities

Provide client-centered support to women in the Shelter, connecting with external allies and resources.
Offer ongoing assistance including initial and ongoing assessment, goal setting and support, systems navigation, and case management.
Support and regularly review client goal plans.
Complete administrative tasks, including database entry, updates, and service-related reports.
Provide crisis intervention support as needed.
Effectively navigate community support services and make appropriate referrals.
Work within a multi-disciplinary team, liaising with others to promote a supportive and respectful environment.
Ensure the flow of critical information, including documentation and shift changes, to address issues and occurrences during the shift.
Promote a mutually supportive environment emphasizing collaborative approaches and valuing contributions from all members, including staff and clients.
Perform other duties as required.

Requirements

Post-secondary degree or diploma in Human Services, Social Work, Addictions, or Mental Health.
Minimum of 2 years of professional experience in social services or related fields, or a combination of relevant education and experience.
Experience working in a women-centered organization is an asset.
Certificates in First Aid, CPR, crisis intervention and prevention, and harm reduction are an asset.
Ability to respond in the moment in a calm and effective manner.
Understanding of the mid- and long-term impact and outcomes for clients and services.
Ability to navigate social and institutional systems from a client-centered and community capacity building framework.
