About the Role
Discord is seeking a Director, Product Risk and Compliance to lead its global product compliance function, focusing on privacy, safety, security, and consumer protection. This senior leadership role requires operational rigor and subject matter depth, reporting to the Senior Director, Product Law.
Responsibilities
- Lead three teams: privacy compliance, safety and revenue compliance, and security GRC, unifying their operating philosophy and setting clear direction.
- Partner with product and engineering teams to identify and navigate compliance obligations and build sustainable controls.
- Own Discord's product risk registers across privacy, safety, and security, identifying, tracking, and remediating risks.
- Build and maintain a control library and compliance maturity framework.
- Produce risk and compliance reporting for various internal audiences.
- Lay the foundation for audits and potential certifications (e.g., SOC 2, ISO 27001).
- Work cross-functionally to integrate compliance considerations into planning and product development processes.
- Serve as a credible voice on product risk and compliance at all company levels.
Requirements
- 12+ years of experience in compliance, risk management, or a related field.
- Demonstrated experience leading compliance functions across multiple subject matter areas.
- Breadth across at least two of the following domains: privacy (GDPR, CCPA), online safety and content regulation (DSA, COPPA), or security compliance (SOC 2, ISO 27001, NIST CSF).
- Experience owning risk registers, building control libraries, setting maturity targets, and producing risk reporting.
- Experience managing teams across multiple compliance disciplines with strong people management and prioritization skills.
- Strong executive communication skills.
- A clear point of view on how compliance programs should be built and run, adaptable to Discord's stage, culture, and risk profile.
- Comfort operating in a fast-moving environment with incomplete information.
