About the Role
Kodama Systems is seeking a Hardware Engineering Technician to be the hands behind their hardware. This role involves building, installing, and debugging custom electromechanical systems in a prototyping lab and in the field. The technician will work closely with engineers, and their craftsmanship will directly influence product development. The position requires frequent travel up to 50% and is based in the Bay Area.
Responsibilities
- Build custom hardware using wire harness fabrication, electrical cabinet and control panel assembly, mechanical fabrication, and soldering.
- Install and integrate hardware onto new machines at OEM factories and dealer lots.
- Manage and maintain the prototyping lab, ensuring it is organized, stocked, and equipped.
- Execute engineering tests to validate hardware and provide feedback to the design team.
- Debug prototype hardware in both lab and field environments, resolving electrical, mechanical, and integration issues.
Requirements
- Hands-on experience building and debugging electromechanical hardware, including soldering and crimping.
- Proficiency with bench debug tools such as multimeters and oscilloscopes.
- Experience with wire harness fabrication, including crimping and connectorization.
- Ability to perform electrical panel/cabinet assembly and interpret electrical schematics and wiring diagrams.
- Fundamental mechanical fabrication skills using hand and power tools.
- Willingness and ability to travel up to 50% to factories and dealer lots.
- Ability to work in field and shop environments, including occasional lifting up to 50 lbs, standing for extended periods, and working in outdoor conditions.
- Soldering proficiency, including through-hole and surface-mount work.
- Experience with heavy equipment, agriculture, automotive, off-road, or similar rugged systems.
- Familiarity with low-voltage DC systems, automotive-grade wiring, and CAN bus.
- Basic CAD literacy for reading drawings and proposing fixes.
- Comfort with Linux command line, SSH, and basic embedded/robotics tooling.
- Prior experience in a startup or fast-moving prototyping environment.
