About the Role

3 is building the definitive digital platform for Third Culture Individuals and is looking for an Art Director to own and shape its visual identity. This is a build role, offering the chance to define a publication's entire visual world from its inception. The visual standard is paramount, reflecting the publication's intelligence, taste, and global perspective. The role involves hands-on creation and direction across print, web, newsletter, social media, and brand campaigns, utilizing technology to enhance production speed and quality.

Responsibilities

  • Own and steward 3’s visual identity across print, web, newsletter, social, and campaigns.
  • Art-direct the quarterly print magazine, maintaining the design standard.
  • Define and document the visual system, including typography, colour, composition, and image treatment.
  • Prioritize editorial imagery over stock and taste over trend.
  • Create hero imagery and feature visuals for digital stories from concept to publish.
  • Design and produce platform-native visuals for social media channels.
  • Design the visual experience for the newsletter and subscriber platform.
  • Translate print features into digital visual treatments.
  • Work hands-on with photography direction, illustration, layout, and motion.
  • Conceive, design, and lead visual campaigns for launches, seasonal moments, and subscriber drives.
  • Build campaign concepts that translate across channels.
  • Ensure campaigns are unmistakably 3 and advance the platform.
  • Build templates and systems for beautiful digital production at speed.
  • Use technology to generate, iterate, and produce visuals.
  • Build and refine automations to remove repetitive production work.
  • Stay current on relevant tools and adopt them selectively based on visual quality.
  • Brief, commission, and direct photographers, illustrators, and other visual contributors.
  • Coordinate with the Partnerships team to maintain visual standards in branded and sponsored work.
  • Brief the EVP regularly on the visual system, output, and campaign performance.

Requirements

  • 5+ years in art direction or design, ideally at a quality publication, design studio, or brand.
  • A portfolio demonstrating editorial-grade art direction across print and digital formats, and ideally campaign work.
  • Expert command of design tools including Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator) and Figma.
  • Demonstrable AI fluency in visual production, including generative work, prompt frameworks, custom models, or production systems.
  • Strong typographic skill and a refined eye for composition, colour, and image.
  • Experience art-directing photography and illustration commissions.
  • Motion and short-form video literacy, or the willingness to develop it quickly.
  • Familiarity with how visuals perform across web and social, and with publishing CMS environments (WordPress, Webflow, or equivalent).
  • Cross-cultural visual fluency, understanding that visual codes are not universal.
  • A degree in design, visual communication, fine art, or a related field, or equivalent demonstrated craft.
