About the Role

Animal Care and Adoptions Specialists manage daily functions and growth of lifesaving programs like adoptions, and provide basic animal care. Specialists act with urgency to achieve Best Friends Animal Society’s no-kill mission and organizational success, potentially receiving intensive program assignments based on organizational needs.

Responsibilities

• Demonstrate kindness, inclusion, and respect for all individuals.
• Model authenticity, kindness, and positive influence with colleagues, visitors, volunteers, and animals, including active listening, support, compassion, and curiosity in conflict.
• Promote and facilitate pet adoptions, providing superior customer service, new pet parent counseling, and post-adoption support.
• Deliver superior customer service, assisting adopters, fosters, and transfer partners by matching them with appropriate animals based on client and animal needs.
• Support volunteers on all aspects of lifesaving care and outcome programs, including protocols, animal behavior, handling, transportation, data entry, and communications.
• Collaborate with team members to achieve lifesaving goals, following policies and procedures for daily assignments, communications, work completion, data entry, and recordkeeping.
• Maintain a safe workplace, model safe practices, adhere to safety rules, and report unsafe conditions to leadership.

Requirements

• Previous experience handling dogs and cats in a professional or volunteer setting.
• Basic ability to identify and describe medical and behavioral characteristics of dogs and cats.
• Prior experience providing a high level of customer service in a client or community-facing role.
• Customer-centric, non-judgmental approach to engaging with adopters, partners, visitors, volunteers, and colleagues; familiarity with a conversational adoption process.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office products.
• Familiarity with shelter software/animal management software, or desire to learn.
• Ability to professionally advocate Best Friends’ positions on issues.
• Experience in supporting, engaging with, and developing relationships with volunteers and donors.
• Ability to routinely lift 40 pounds and perform daily strenuous activity including lifting, carrying, reaching, stooping, squatting, cleaning, and bending.
• Ability to work at a computer and perform repetitive tasks for extended periods, including typing, arm, and hand motion.
• Ability to stand, sit, or walk for extended periods.
• Ability to work with, leash, kennel, walk, and handle cats and dogs, including those with health and/or behavior conditions/concerns.
• Ability to work indoors and outdoors in various weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold.
• Comfort with exposure to dogs and cats of all sizes, temperaments, and medical status.
• Ability to travel, including overnight stays, when needed.
• Valid work authorization in the U.S. that does not require visa sponsorship now or in the future.
