About the Role
The Pharmacy Assistant performs technical tasks delegated by Pharmacists, Compounding Specialists, Pharmacy Supervisors, or Infusion Pharmacy Managers, adhering to Bayshore and Ontario College of Pharmacists policies. This includes sterile-preparation compounding under supervision and quality control. The role involves processing prescriptions, accurately entering patient, medication, and billing information, prioritizing tasks, and preparing infusion and TPN medications according to USP 797 Guidelines. Additionally, the assistant processes, prepares, and bills orders, and participates in inventory management. The position reports to the Pharmacy Supervisor and ultimately to the Pharmacy Manager.
Responsibilities
- Maintain Federal, Provincial, and Local regulations, accrediting body standards, and Bayshore’s Policies and Procedures.
- Schedule patient medication orders for preparation and dispensing for repeat medications.
- Prepare required infusion supplies for delivery of medication.
- Enter prescriptions into the prescription software (Kroll) for filling/billing.
- Refill medications through the prescription software (Kroll).
- Prepare and label medications as required by law.
- Appropriately assemble drugs and supplies by matching codes and quantities from the compounding document.
- Correctly label product.
- Ensure compounded products are matched to the right delivery section prior to shipping.
- Order, receive, and store medications and supplies in the appropriate environment.
- Perform physical inventories according to policies and procedures.
- Maintain pharmacy records, including filing and documenting required information on dispensing records.
- Communicate appropriately with clients, their agents, SWHCCSS staff, and medical professionals.
- Participate in performance improvement and quality assurance activities, education programs, and department/site meetings.
- Amalgamate adjacent supply and medication orders.
- Liaise with the delivery department to ensure delivery due dates are met.
- Demonstrate good stewardship in the identification, reporting, and mitigation of unsafe acts or conditions.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Ability to remain calm and effective in stressful situations.
- Ability to meet deadlines and work well under pressure.
- Concentration required to perform duties accurately and safely in a high activity environment.
- Spends the majority of the shift on feet, including standing and walking for extended periods.
- Regularly lifts, pushes, pulls, carries, or moves objects of varying weights.
- Occasionally required to lift up to 50 lbs. unassisted.
- Performs physical tasks such as bending, twisting, and reaching to move supplies or other items.
- Answers phone calls and triages inquiries to the appropriate area.
- Interacts regularly with customers, external agencies, healthcare providers, and team members.
- Communicates through a variety of methods, including phone, in-person, and electronic channels.
Skills
- Specialized Aseptic Technique training (asset)
- Knowledge of USP 797 Standards
- Knowledge of NAPRA standards
