Responsibilities

  • Plan, organize, and direct design activities for school upgrade and critical repair projects.
  • Serve as lead design professional, providing quality review, implementing policies and procedures, and coordinating with the Division of State Architects (DSA).
  • Manage, develop, and coordinate the District’s design process to ensure plans meet functional, budgetary, environmental, and legal requirements.
  • Manage multiple projects, interacting with architects, consultants, and District personnel from conception to project execution handoff.
  • Oversee building design to ensure compliance with LAUSD standards and guidelines, meeting educational and building requirements.
  • Establish and follow a process for selecting architectural firms based on qualifications and performance standards.
  • Provide architects with clear direction on project goals, objectives, standards, site, schedule, and budget.
  • Establish and follow an effective design review process to ensure project goals, budget value, and functional needs are met.
  • Ensure timely decision-making.
  • Ensure project steps are documented and meet legal requirements.
  • Review design changes to ensure projects remain within budget.
  • Recommend architectural firm assignments from a pre-qualified list.
  • Participate in community relations and outreach programs to foster understanding and acceptance of District building designs.
  • Coordinate with professional staff supporting the District's design function.
  • Develop continuing education opportunities (seminars, workshops) for architects and contractors.
  • Coordinate project activities with other District departments (e.g., Environmental Health and Safety, A/E Design Services, Maintenance and Operations, School Occupancy Transitional Unit, Asbestos Technical Unit, Local Districts).
  • Perform other assigned duties.

Requirements

  • Minimum 10 years of full-time professional experience managing facilities design or planning/coordination of capital projects, including design, contract administration, cost estimating, and scheduling.
  • 5 years of experience in design, planning, and construction of educational facilities or similar public agencies.

Salary/Compensations

  • $152,699 - $162,004
