About the Role

The Lead Teacher manages the academic, instructional, remedial, behavioral, and adaptive needs of children in an assigned age-level classroom within LSSNY’s early childhood program. This role requires strong management skills to foster the instructional process, supervision of classroom staff, and adherence to governmental reporting mandates. The teacher will collaborate with staff, parents, guardians, outside agencies, and funders to support children.

Responsibilities

  • Uphold Lutheran Social Service of New York’s mission, values, ethics, and Code of Conduct.
  • Oversee and provide classroom activities and instruction tailored to children’s developmental goals.
  • Develop curricula and enrichment activities to encourage student interest and participation.
  • Follow the collaboratively developed schedule with the Educational Coordinator.
  • Prepare daily lesson plans for all instructional periods.
  • Maintain accurate records of individual student progress.
  • Ensure an appropriate physical environment in the classroom or work area.
  • Implement appropriate safety measures for children and staff protection.
  • Provide enrichment activities for parents and guardians at designated events.
  • Suggest improvements to the Director of Pre-school to enhance center offerings.
  • Assist with other duties as assigned by the Center Director, including food service.
  • Provide support at other locations as needed.
  • Supervise children, Assistant Teachers, Teacher’s Aides/Floaters, Volunteers, and Interns.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 1 year experience in a childcare setting or working with children.

Skills

  • Ability to provide instruction for Early Childhood age level population.
  • Effective management skills and techniques for Early Childhood age level population.
  • Effective communication with site director administration, fellow teachers, service staff, parents, and guardians.
  • Ability to write appropriate and targeted student progress reports.
  • Ability to adapt expertise to meet student learning needs.
  • Ability to work with parents and community members to meet student learning needs.

Experience Level

  • Minimum of 1 year experience in a childcare setting or working with children.

Education Level

  • Certification preferred, or study plan eligible on a pathway towards NYS certification.
  • Enrolled in BA/S program in Education or ECE with 90 completed college credits.
  • BA in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, Child Psychology, Elementary Education (N-6), Special Education (B-2), or General Education (with 12 credits in Early Childhood Education) while enrolled in a MS program pursuing Early Childhood Education or Students with Disabilities (Birth through 2) or Childhood Education (covering through grade 6).
  • MS in ECE or Childhood Education while consistently taking certification exams until passed and certification acquired.

Salary/Compensations

  • $38,334.00 - $68,652.00 per year.
  • Salary commensurate with license and/or degree.
