About the Role

This position is responsible for disseminating news and information to the general public, City employees, and the media regarding departmental and Citywide programs. Duties contribute to marketing, public relations, media relations, and publication for internal and external education and communication. The role is part of the Finance and Support Services team within the Austin Technology Services department, focusing on developing and disseminating information, building brand strategy, and improving internal and external communications through publications, web presence, and video development to achieve departmental objectives.

Responsibilities

  • Work on complex assignments requiring considerable judgment and initiative.
  • Lead individual projects or act as an account representative for client departments and programs.
  • Develop long-range strategic plans.
  • Write, plan, organize, direct, coordinate, and edit articles for various publications, including electronic.
  • Coordinate all aspects of marketing material production.
  • Perform media relations duties, including media buying, news releases, and fielding media questions.
  • Coordinate public relations duties, including public and school education, presentations, facility tours, and general public information requests.
  • Design, research, write, and edit newsletters and releases for internal or external use.
  • Produce public service announcements and promotional videos.
  • May train and lead others.
  • Develop corporate communications plans, strategies, policy development, and implementation.
  • Develop long-range strategic business and marketing plans.
  • Conduct market research as needed.
  • Design, write, and edit the ATS hub, newsletters, publications, and marketing materials for internal or external use.
  • Act as official spokesperson for the department, including crisis situations.
  • Develop presentation templates and brand standards, assisting with change management through communications.
  • Assist staff in promoting the Austin Technology Services department at conferences and exhibits.

Requirements

  • Graduation with a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in Marketing, Public Relations, Journalism, Advertising, or a related field.
  • Four years of progressive experience in developing and implementing public information programs.
  • One year of experience in a team leader or coordinator capacity.
  • Experience may substitute for the education up to a maximum of four years.

Skills

  • Knowledge of public information, marketing, public relations, and media relations programs.
  • Knowledge of municipal government functions and organization, including departmental relationships.
  • Knowledge of customer service standards.
  • Oral and written communication skills.
  • Skill in handling multiple tasks and prioritizing.
  • Skill in using computers and related software.
  • Data analysis and problem-solving skills.
  • Planning and organizing skills.
  • Ability to interpret policies and guidelines.
  • Ability to write articles for publication.
  • Ability to work with frequent interruptions and changes in priorities.
  • Ability to lead and train others.
  • Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with City employees and the public.
  • Expertise with Canva or similar tools (preferred).
  • Expertise with SharePoint or similar tools (preferred).
  • Experience interviewing and authoring enticing media stories with visuals (preferred).
  • Experience with project management for communication planning (preferred).

Location

  • Austin, Texas
  • Hybrid work schedule requiring 3 days onsite per week
  • Must reside in the state of Texas

Experience Level

Salary/Compensations

  • $32.96 - $43.26 per hour
