About the Role

The Lead Teacher is responsible for the academic, instructional, remedial, behavioral, and adaptive needs of children in an assigned age-level classroom within LSSNY’s early childhood program. This role requires strong management skills to foster the pre-school classroom instructional process and involves supervising Assistant Teachers, Aides, Floaters, Volunteers, and Interns. The teacher must understand and meet governmental reporting mandates and work cooperatively with staff, parents, guardians, outside agencies, and funders.

Responsibilities

  • Represent Lutheran Social Service of New York’s mission, values, ethics, and Code of Conduct.
  • Oversee and provide classroom activities and instruction tailored to children’s developmental goals.
  • Develop curricula and enrichment activities to encourage student interest and participation.
  • Follow schedules developed collaboratively with the Educational Coordinator.
  • Prepare daily lesson plans for all instructional periods.
  • Keep accurate records of individual student progress.
  • Maintain an appropriate physical environment in the classroom or work area.
  • Maintain appropriate safety measures for children and staff.
  • Provide enrichment activities for parents and guardians at designated events.
  • Suggest improvements to the Director of Pre-school to enrich center offerings.
  • Assist with other duties as assigned by the Center Director, including food service.
  • Support at other locations if needed.

Requirements

  • Certification preferred, or study plan eligible on a pathway towards NYS certification.
  • Study plan eligibility requires enrollment in a BA/S program in Education or ECE with 90 completed college credits.
  • Study plan eligibility requires a BA in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, Child Psychology, Elementary Education (N-6), Special Education (B-2), or General Education (with 12 credits in Early Childhood Education) while enrolled in an MS program pursuing Early Childhood Education, Students with Disabilities (Birth through 2), or Childhood Education (covering through grade 6).
  • Study plan eligibility requires an MS in ECE or Childhood Education while consistently taking certification exams until passed and certification acquired.
  • Minimum of 1 year experience in a childcare setting or working with children.

Skills

  • Ability to provide instruction for the Early Childhood age level population.
  • Effective management skills and techniques for an Early Childhood age level population.
  • Effective communication with site director administration, fellow teachers, service staff, parents, and guardians.
  • Ability to write appropriate and targeted student progress reports.
  • Ability to adapt expertise to meet student learning needs.
  • Ability to work with parents and other community members to meet student learning needs.
  • Functional understanding and ability to meet all reporting mandates as determined by various governmental agencies.
