About the Role

As an Associate Technical Supervisor at Netflix Animation Studios, you will support the technical vision for animated feature films, partnering with the Technical Supervisor, Solutions Engineering, and creative leadership. You will evolve pipeline tools and workflows to meet creative and technical challenges, ensuring solutions serve artists and align with studio standards. This role focuses on technical success across the production pipeline, potentially supporting Front End, Performance, or Back End based on show needs and experience. Your primary focus will be providing day-to-day technical oversight for pipeline troubleshooting, user support, direction, and tool development to achieve creative and visual objectives.

Responsibilities

  • Support the technical vision for animated feature films.
  • Contribute to shaping and evolving pipeline tools and workflows.
  • Provide day-to-day technical oversight for pipeline troubleshooting, user support, direction, and tool development.
  • Oversee technical direction and support for one or more production pipeline stages.
  • Ensure technical processes, tools, and workflows run smoothly and meet creative and technical requirements.
  • Integrate technical solutions well with the rest of the pipeline.
  • Provide hands-on technical leadership to TDs.
  • Support artists with technical challenges.
  • Collaborate with Technical Supervisors to maintain consistency and quality across production.
  • Understand film's visual goals and design enabling tools, workflows, and procedures.
  • Troubleshoot and optimize production workflows, providing solutions through existing or new tool development.
  • Safeguard artist productivity by testing and validating new tools and pipeline changes.
  • Track and resolve issues in partnership with Technical Supervisors, Solutions Engineering, and R&D.
  • Contribute to building and improving show and studio-wide pipelines.
  • Ensure efficient collaboration across departments and support broader technical objectives.
  • Track and manage development initiatives, monitoring estimates, scope, and deadlines.
  • Adjust plans as needed to keep work on track.
  • Partner with the Technical Supervisor to prioritize and resolve top support issues.
  • Coordinate cross-departmental testing for high-priority fixes.
  • Organize technical work by breaking down projects and aligning support allocation.
  • Communicate production and technical information to TDs and Program Managers.
  • Collaborate with the Technical Supervisor and Solutions Engineering Manager to prepare estimates, pitches, and plans for show-specific technical work.
  • Provide day-to-day technical guidance to TDs.
  • Collaborate with the Solutions Engineering Manager to escalate issues.
  • Mentor and develop TDs, supporting onboarding for new team members.
  • Partner with Technology Talent Management and Solutions Engineering Managers to grow skills.
  • Identify team management issues early and implement constructive solutions.
  • Foster collaboration and create synergies between work groups to drive efficiency and innovation.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely on technical topics, including project status, requirements, problems, and rollout plans.
  • Collaborate with Program Managers on scheduling and planning show-based initiatives.
  • Provide accurate status and expectations.
  • Tailor communication to the audience, explaining issues to artists and production, and discussing complex topics with developers and supervisors.
  • Present to small teams (e.g., tool demos, pipeline processes, support dashboards).
  • Produce clear written documentation such as specs, tickets, and status updates.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of pipeline TD experience in animated features, animated TV series, or VFX feature films.
  • Demonstrated leadership in feature animation or VFX.
  • Strong technical foundation.
  • Familiarity with data flow, metadata, and publishing concepts.
  • Ability to review code and troubleshoot issues.
  • Deep understanding of traditional production workflows, tools, and techniques.
  • Experience using and troubleshooting relevant DCCs and production tracking software (e.g., Flow Production Tracking/ShotGrid).
  • Experience with modern software development and collaboration practices (e.g., git/GitHub, code review, Agile methodologies, Jira).
  • Demonstrated strength in problem-solving, conflict resolution, and risk awareness.
  • Ability to adapt to evolving project requirements and dynamic team interactions.
