About the Role
The Data Science and Biostatistics Unit (DSBU) within the Department of Biomedical and Health Informatics (DBHi) provides data management, analysis, and consultation to researchers across CHOP’s Research Institute. The interdisciplinary team specializes in diverse multimodal healthcare data and a wide range of machine learning and statistical methodologies. This role leads a team of data scientists, ensuring high-quality work delivery and collaborating with principal investigators to achieve meaningful research outcomes and academic output. The manager will advance DSBU priorities, manage the data science team, and oversee budgets, serving as both a mentor and individual contributor, particularly in computer vision and natural language processing projects involving image, video, and unstructured text healthcare data.
Responsibilities
- Build and manage a team of staff scientists for data science research program development and execution.
- Recruit, hire, and manage staff, including performance and career development.
- Collaborate with clinical and biomedical researchers to identify data science research questions.
- Lead data science research experiment planning and execution, serving as Principal or Co-investigator when appropriate.
- Identify relevant funding opportunities and lead collaborative proposal planning and writing.
- Disseminate research findings through peer-reviewed journal articles and professional conference presentations.
- Communicate research methods, implementation, and results to diverse audiences of clinicians, scientists, analysts, and programmers.
- Guide and mentor junior staff and biomedical researcher collaborators on research project execution.
- Serve as the subject matter expert for computational algorithm implementation, testing, evaluation, and advanced data interpretation to assess algorithm performance.
- Set standards and ensure staff accountability for formulating analysis plans that meet stringent criteria for reproducibility and measures of significance.
- Serve as the subject matter expert and lead architect for developing high-quality code implementing models and algorithms as application programming interfaces or other service-oriented software.
- Lead education for diverse audiences on data science research methods, implementation, and results.
- Mentor junior staff, student workers, co-ops, and research trainees (fellows, post-docs).
- Manage large, complex projects, take responsibility for major components of larger research initiatives, assign work to junior staff, and track deliverables against project timelines.
Requirements
- Expertise in acquiring new technical/analytic skills and domain knowledge for research and development projects.
- Expertise in formulating analysis plans and selecting appropriate methods.
- Expertise using machine learning and analytic tools such as ScikitLearn, Weka, R, and Mathematica in applied academic or professional projects.
- Expertise writing code in Python, Scala, or Java for applied academic or professional projects.
- Applied statistics or mathematical modeling experience.
- At least seven years of experience in applied algorithm development, data science, applied statistics, machine learning, or mathematical modeling projects.
- At least three years of leadership, management, or supervisory experience.
Skills
- Familiarity with relational databases (e.g., Postgres, MySQL).
- Familiarity with RESTful web services application programming interfaces.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to explain complex technical concepts to a lay audience.
- Natural language processing experience, particularly in biological and medical domains.
- Experience using distributed computing technologies (e.g., Akka, MapReduce, Cuda).
- Familiarity with graph, key-value, and document data stores (e.g., Neo4j, Hadoop, MongoDB).
- Experience creating informative visualizations for complex, high-dimensional data.
- Experience with probabilistic graphical models, time series predictive models, Markov models.
