About the Role

This role advances a strong, consistent, and forward-looking biosafety program, supporting research excellence, operational integrity, and responsible conduct with biological materials. The Biosafety Officer provides expert leadership in risk assessment, regulatory compliance, training, and program development to improve human health.

Responsibilities

• Lead the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of a global biosafety program across JAX locations.
• Partner with leadership, EHS teams, researchers, and committees to ensure compliant biosafety processes.
• Provide expert guidance on identifying, evaluating, and controlling biological risks, including laboratory practices, containment strategies, and facility biosafety.
• Oversee biological and chemical risk assessments, protocol reviews, and program support for work with biological agents, recombinant/synthetic nucleic acid technologies, human materials, and regulated biohazards.
• Collaborate with governance bodies, including the Institutional Biosafety Committee, and stakeholders to review new work, amendments, incidents, and emerging biosafety issues.
• Develop, maintain, and enhance biosafety manuals, exposure control plans, guidance, training materials, and program documentation.
• Monitor biosafety performance via audits, inspections, metrics, and reviews to drive corrective actions and continuous improvement.
• Lead or support investigations into biosafety incidents, identify root causes, and ensure effective corrective actions.
• Build strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including regulators, auditors, service providers, and site leaders, to support an effective biosafety framework.
• Serve as a visible leader and trusted advisor promoting biosafety awareness, accountability, stewardship, and operational excellence.

Requirements

• Significant professional experience in biosafety, environmental health and safety, or laboratory safety within a research, healthcare, biotechnology, pharmaceutical, or complex environment.
• Strong knowledge of biosafety principles, laboratory containment practices, and regulatory frameworks for biological research and laboratory operations.
• Experience conducting biological and chemical risk assessments, supporting incident investigations, and implementing risk mitigation strategies.
• Experience working cross-functionally and building partnerships with leaders, scientists, and operational teams on complex biosafety matters.
• Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, translating technical requirements into clear guidance.
• Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
• Demonstrated leadership, sound judgment, and commitment to fostering a proactive, service-oriented safety culture.
• Experience supporting biosafety programs across multiple geographic locations or within a global organization.
• Familiarity with CDC and NIH biosafety guidance, NIH Guidelines, OSHA requirements, and management systems (ISO 35001, ISO 45001, ISO 14001).
