About the Role
Support the Catastrophe Modelling and Exposure Management team by delivering high-quality catastrophe analytics to underpin disciplined underwriting decisions, support risk selection and pricing, and contribute to strong and sustainable underwriting performance. The International Portfolio Analytics (IPA) team is a dynamic, multi-functional group supporting all divisions of Markel International, focusing on Portfolio Management, Pricing Transformation, Advanced Analytics, and Catastrophe & Exposure Management. The team's mission is to enable consistent underwriting profitability and superior financial outcomes through data-driven analytical support. This role involves pre-underwriting analytics, class and entity level reporting, ad-hoc analysis, and view of risk development across natural catastrophe and anthropogenic risks.
Responsibilities
- Build and maintain strong relationships with divisional underwriters.
- Provide ad hoc analytics for underwriting portfolio analysis and reporting for senior executives.
- Utilize third-party catastrophe models and in-house tools for pre-underwriting analysis.
- Present results and ideas to senior stakeholders and underwriting teams.
- Collaborate with colleagues in other Markel offices and the wider portfolio analytics team.
- Liaise with outsourcing partners and model vendors.
- Assist in team projects and initiatives, including view of risk development.
- Assist in producing internal and external reporting, including to Lloyds and the PRA.
Requirements
- Proven catastrophe modelling or aggregation management experience in the London market.
- Strong understanding of industry-standard catastrophe models (Verisk preferred).
- Strong appetite to think creatively and challenge modelling assumptions and processes.
- Excellent IT skills.
- Good knowledge of SQL and/or Python.
- Proven experience with catastrophe management best practices and portfolio level aggregation techniques.
- Experience building and maintaining successful relationships with internal and external contacts.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and meet tight deadlines.
