About the Role

The Personal Support Worker provides essential personal support and homemaking services to clients and families, collaborating with the healthcare team to promote client independence and well-being within VON's policies and standards.

Responsibilities

  • Observe and evaluate client/family situations to determine care plan needs and report changes to supervisor.
  • Contribute to the development of personal support care plans under manager's direction.
  • Implement care plan changes for safety, liability, and financial reasons under manager's guidance.
  • Report changes in client needs or home situation to supervisor.
  • Perform personal support tasks including light cleaning, meal preparation, clothing care, shopping, and household safety monitoring.
  • Provide personal care as directed, assisting clients with mobility, eating, dressing, and hygiene.
  • Offer simple bedside care under nurse's direction.
  • Provide respite care as needed.
  • Support clients' families by providing childcare for relief.
  • Organize daily activities and set priorities for personal support.
  • Complete daily call checks and other required forms for service operation.
  • Assess client communication patterns and ability to relate.
  • Communicate with healthcare team members regarding client needs and report changes or concerns to supervisor.
  • Function and report in compliance with Occupational Health and Safety legislation and VON policies.
  • Function in accordance with VON's risk management policies to promote and protect client safety.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Promote the goals and values of VON and their role as an integrated community care provider.
  • Promote a safe and healthy workplace.
  • Abide by all VON policies and work practices.
  • Abide by all confidentiality and protection of personal information policies.
  • Work in collaboration with other staff in a team approach to service delivery.

Requirements

  • Must have access to a personal vehicle for work.
  • Must possess a current driver's license.
  • Must possess proof of vehicle insurance.
  • A current and original copy of a satisfactory Criminal Records Check is required.
  • A Vulnerable Sector Search and/or a Child Abuse Registry Check may be required.
  • Must be able to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with clients and families with respect, empathy, and understanding.
  • Good assessment skills.
  • Awareness of community resources.
  • Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team or independently.
  • Ability to take direction well.

  • Capacity to adhere to strict confidentiality.

Education Level

  • High school diploma
  • Secondary school education preferred
  • CCA Certification required in Nova Scotia
  • Certificate in Home Support Worker (Level I, II, III), Personal Support Worker program or Health Care Aide
  • Current Standard First Aid Certificate or CPR level C Certificate, if applicable
