About the Role

The Personal Support Worker provides essential personal support and homemaking services to clients and families, collaborating with the healthcare team to promote client independence and well-being. This role involves supporting high-needs and complex-care clients, requiring flexibility and longer visit durations.

Responsibilities

  • Observe and evaluate client/family situations and care plans, advising supervisors of necessary changes.
  • Contribute to the development of personal support care plans under manager direction.
  • Implement care plan changes for safety, liability, and financial reasons.
  • Report changes in client needs or home situations to supervisors.
  • Perform personal support tasks including light cleaning, meal preparation, and household safety monitoring.
  • Provide personal care, assisting clients with mobility, dressing, and hygiene as directed.
  • Offer simple bedside care under nurse direction.
  • Provide respite care as needed.
  • Support clients' families by providing childcare for relief.
  • Organize daily activities and set priorities for personal support.
  • Complete daily call checks and other required forms for service operation.
  • Assess client communication patterns and ability to relate.
  • Communicate with healthcare team members regarding client needs and inform supervisors of concerns.
  • Comply with Occupational Health and Safety legislation, regulations, and VON policies.
  • Function in accordance with VON's risk management policies to promote client safety.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Promote VON goals and values as an integrated community care provider.
  • Ensure a safe and healthy workplace in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and VON Safety Management System.
  • Abide by all VON policies and work practices.
  • Adhere to confidentiality and personal information protection policies.
  • Collaborate with other staff in a team approach to service delivery.

Requirements

  • High school diploma.
  • CCA Certification is required in Nova Scotia.
  • Certificate in Home Support Worker (Level I, II, III), Personal Support Worker program or Health Care Aide.
  • Current Standard First Aid Certificate or CPR level C Certificate, if applicable.
  • Post Secondary degree or diploma is considered an asset.
  • Some household management experience.
  • Experience working with elderly or ill individuals or children.
  • Must have access to a personal vehicle for work.
  • Must possess a current driver’s license.
  • Must possess proof of vehicle insurance.
  • A current and original copy of a satisfactory Criminal Records Check.
  • A Vulnerable Sector Search and/or a Child Abuse Registry Check may be required.
  • Available to work flexible hours.
  • Must be able to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
