About the Role

This Biology Technician role involves preparing tissue and sectioning material for the manufacture of educational slides, with performance assessed on both quality and efficiency.

Responsibilities

  • Preparing tissue and sectioning material for the manufacture of educational slides.
  • Controlling microtome and other technical equipment.
  • Checking section quality throughout the process and adjusting as necessary.
  • Affixing specimens to glass.
  • Staining specimens, following and adjusting steps to achieve technical criteria.
  • Permanently mounting specimens without introducing air.
  • Investigating and determining how to solve problems in production or quality.
  • Collaborating with expeditor and Sr. Techs to satisfy acute customer needs.
  • Planning ways and deciding how to satisfy production/quality goals.
  • Investigating and interpreting specimen structure and quality (Trial specimens).
  • Determining plane of section, suitability for teaching biology, and specific usage.
  • Maintaining order and supplies in personal lab space.
  • Participating in recycling programs and maintenance of shared equipment.

Requirements

  • Science degree required.
  • Experience in slide making is a plus.
  • Must be well organized, able to handle multiple projects, and be an effective team player.
  • Knowledge of normal/optimal specimen structure and quality to assess acceptability.
  • Knowledge of general lab procedures including staining to troubleshoot problems.
  • Ability to analyze a problem to isolate the source of difficulty and fix it.
  • Knowledge of general laboratory safety and hazardous chemicals.
  • Ability to independently plan and organize time to meet laboratory production goals.
  • Ability to follow multi-step procedures accurately.
  • High level of motor skill, manual dexterity, and patience.
  • Basic computer skills including word processing, familiarity with windows 98 and 2000.
  • Customer service abilities including friendliness, a positive attitude, and phone etiquette.
