About the Role
The Staff Attorney assists the Executive Director of the Texas Access to Justice Commission in developing, coordinating, and implementing initiatives to improve access to justice for low-income Texans.
Responsibilities
- Assists in formulating recommendations for program development, coordination, and implementation, including legal training and law student programs.
- Conducts legal research and drafts legal memoranda, legislation, rules, policies, and other documents related to reducing barriers to the judicial system for low-income Texans.
- Attends legislative, committee, or court meetings and serves as a resource on legal access matters.
- Stays informed of best practices in self-represented litigation, reporting findings to the Executive Director.
- Confers with experts and stakeholders, conducting research and analysis of laws, legislation, case law, and policy affecting self-represented litigants.
- Assists in convening, organizing, and facilitating meetings with diverse stakeholders to achieve strategic goals.
- Helps strengthen relationships with legal access stakeholders.
- Evaluates and drafts agreements with stakeholders on implementing Commission-approved laws, policies, and procedures.
- Understands laws affecting low-income Texans and their impact on specific populations.
- Collaborates with various entities to achieve the Commission’s strategic goals.
- Researches specific practice areas to advise and assist in legal access projects.
- Researches changes in case law, rules, and statutes to recommend updates for forms and compliance with current law.
- Prepares drafts of reports, articles, and grant applications for publication and funding.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Must be a licensed attorney.
- Minimum of three years of experience, preferably in poverty law, legal aid, or public policy.
- May substitute experience as a policy analyst or similar role for up to one year of law practice.
- Demonstrated commitment to the Commission’s mission.
- Demonstrated ability to be self-motivated, adaptable, and work independently and as part of a team without administrative support.
- Excellent writing, editing, and presenting skills, including the ability to explain law, policy, and data in plain language.
- Strong analytical and critical thinking skills, intellectual curiosity, and initiative.
- Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks, and ability to complete projects under time constraints.
- Experience building partnerships with diverse constituencies and working in coalition.
- Experience with or a commitment to master Excel, PowerPoint, and other common software.
- Understanding of barriers low-income people face when they have a legal problem.
- Requires occasional travel.
- Experience working for or with nonprofits, legislative bodies, courts, or other government entities preferred.
