About the Role

The Mental Health Advisor provides culturally-informed counseling, education, support, coaching, and case management services for university students. This role also involves developing and implementing mental health education programs and providing consultation services and training for students, faculty, and staff. The advisor must possess a strong understanding of the role of culture in higher education and extensive skills in serving a diverse, international student community.

Responsibilities

Provide direct psychotherapy/counseling, education, support, and coaching interventions.
Connect students to auxiliary psychotherapeutic services.
Make referrals to other Minerva or community supports.
Assess students with urgent mental health needs and connect them to additional services.
Collaborate with other Minerva staff to coordinate care related to student mental health.
Schedule initial and follow-up appointments.
Serve as a consistent point of contact for students regarding mental health throughout their academic careers.
Provide occasional urgent service and coordination with hospitals.

Requirements

Advanced degree (Masters or Doctorate) in a mental health field (clinical/counseling psychology, clinical social work, mental health counseling, etc.).
Skills, experience, and interest in providing mental health services to a highly diverse, international community; exceptional awareness of intercultural dynamics.
Ability to work semi-independently while providing services to students.
Strong technology skills (email, telehealth platforms, electronic record keeping and scheduling software, Slack, Google products, etc.).
Effective communication skills and ability to work as part of a geographically dispersed team.
Exceptional safety assessment and crisis stabilization skills, particularly related to situations with geographic distance.
Ability for occasional international travel.
Fluency in English.
Ability to work legally in Japan.
Residing in Tokyo, within a one-hour commute to the residence hall in Shinagawa.
Possess a citizen of the world mentality, caring about human development and motivated by potential for positive global change.
