About the Role

This role is responsible for building and managing Substrate's community from scratch, acting as the external face and internal voice for the AI x biology research world. The Community Manager will establish relationships, channels, content, and feedback loops to foster an active, technically engaged community.

Responsibilities

  • Own Substrate's community function end to end.
  • Establish Substrate's presence in communities where potential users and customers spend time.
  • Build and manage community channels.
  • Create content (technical posts, case studies, event recaps) demonstrating platform capabilities.
  • Represent Substrate at conferences and research events.
  • Track engagement to inform commercial and product decisions.
  • Engage substantively with researchers and engineers on science, data quality, and integration architecture.
  • Work closely with partnerships and go-to-market lead as a commercial partner.
  • Map existing relationships across research institutions, frontier AI labs, and the AI-biotech community.
  • Establish Substrate's presence on key channels (newsletter, Slack, forums).
  • Publish substantive technical community content.
  • Identify and outreach to key community anchor relationships.
  • Build and manage community presence around node openings (London and San Francisco).
  • Establish a structured feedback loop between the community and product/science teams.
  • Develop a content calendar and production cadence.
  • Refine community infrastructure (channel selection, moderation, metrics, reporting).
  • Build community to a size and engagement level that measurably inputs into commercial pipeline.
  • Produce a community playbook documenting successful channels, content, events, and cadences.
  • Build community infrastructure for a second node.

Requirements

  • Five or more years in a community, developer relations, scientific outreach, or technical partnerships role at a company serving research, life sciences, or AI practitioners.
  • Demonstrated ability to build a technical community from a low base.
  • Strong written communication skills with a track record of producing technical or scientific content for a specialist audience.
  • Scientific or technical literacy sufficient to engage substantively with biology, data science, and AI practitioners.
  • Willingness to be based in London or San Francisco, with travel to the other location and to key scientific conferences.
