About the Role

The Senior Design Manager is responsible for design decisions related to a portfolio of data center projects, including new construction, expansions, retrofits, and upgrades. They are an industry professional progressing towards becoming a recognized expert in data center design, critically assessing decisions and applying Equinix standards and regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Owns and leads the design process, interacting with Architectural, Mechanical, Electrical Partners (MEPs), and other design partners to deliver world-class data centers with a focus on technical excellence, resilience, and cost management.
  • Reviews and contributes to the development of globally standardized tools, techniques, and processes for managing and reporting the design process.
  • Works with peers in other regions to drive consistency and technical excellence in design and delivery practices.
  • Thinks and acts globally, considering the applicability of design decisions, innovations, or standards changes for all regions.
  • In the regional role: Obtains site-specific conditions, utility design, costs, and availability; liaises with planning authorities and local logistics.
  • Provides locally informed and compliant infrastructure design and supply information to the master planning function.
  • Provides local design engineering to support site-specific changes to templates.
  • Reviews the masterplan for delivery and submits to senior staff for approval.
  • In the Center of Excellence role: Conducts master planning of expansion portfolios using global design standards and templates, incorporating regional information.
  • Generates project visualization, initial models using reference design templates, and cost estimates for business case inception.
  • Liaises with regional teams to incorporate local infrastructure into the design.
  • Liaises with regional and global construction cost teams to assist business case generation.
  • Maintains interpersonal relationships with internal technical staff, external design partners, construction management, commercial management, and regional P&L holders.
  • Leverages center of excellence teams and senior design staff to augment technical expertise.
  • Indirectly manages electrical and mechanical engineering staff in the Independent Technical Review and Innovation & Development teams.
  • Directly responsible for managing the design schedule for assigned projects to ensure timely creation and review of Basis of Designs (BODs), REIC Submissions, and design documentation.
  • In the regional role: Works with construction managers, general contractors, and subcontractors to deliver projects during construction and ensure proper documentation and closeout.
  • Manages design budgets and controls change management requests during construction in consultation with the Construction Manager.
  • In the Center of Excellence role: Works with regional design teams and Construction Managers to deliver Concept Designs and Standards.
  • Manages design costs to ensure appropriate balancing of cost flexibility and global standardization.
  • Stays up-to-date on advancements in design investigated by centers of excellence teams.
  • Ensures designs meet Equinix’s Global Design Standards and business needs for capacity, density, and function.

Requirements

  • Proven years experience in a Design MEP Firm or in the design team of a Mission Critical Building operator or subcontractor.
  • Proven years experience as an Architectural lead in a Mission Critical Architectural Design Practice preferred.
