About the Role

The WIC program staff perform a variety of professional duties for the Women, Infants and Children Program, guided by extensive knowledge of federal and state regulations, and local agency policies. Qualified Nutritionist (QN) staff are trained in the NYSDOH NYWIC computer system and possess expertise to perform all nutrition-related duties.

Responsibilities

• Demonstrates understanding of WIC’s mission, policies, procedures, goals, and objectives, communicating this information to participants, providers, and organizations.
• Demonstrates knowledge of the code of ethics for WIC professionals.
• Demonstrates advanced knowledge of food and nutrition requirements for women, infants, and children per NYSDOH guidelines.
• Conducts comprehensive nutrition assessments and determines nutrition risk virtually or in-person.
• Develops and implements individual care plans (ICPs), oversees high-risk care, tracks progress, and documents outcomes.
• Demonstrates advanced skills in collecting and interpreting anthropometric and hematological data.
• Coordinates participant-centered nutrition education, including breastfeeding promotion and support, responsive to participant needs.
• Provides participant-centered nutrition education in individual and group settings, offering online options.
• Conducts breastfeeding assessments and provides counseling to support initiation, milk supply establishment, and continued breastfeeding.
• Addresses common breastfeeding concerns and provides breast pumps to eligible mothers.
• Demonstrates understanding of how sociocultural issues impact participant nutrition behaviors.
• Documents nutrition services, health and social services referrals, and follow-up actions.
• Ensures appropriate referrals for lead testing, hemoglobin/hematocrit, and immunizations.
• Prescribes, tailors, authorizes, issues, and reissues food packages as needed.
• Reviews and approves special formula requests with medical documentation in consultation with the participant’s Health Care Provider.
• Provides orientation and guidance for setting up WIC health accounts for Online Nutrition Education.
• Adheres to confidentiality and participant safety regulations (HIPAA, USDA, NYSDOH, JPA FHC).
• Reviews Rights and Responsibilities with WIC participants, ensuring understanding.
• Responds courteously to customer service inquiries about the WIC program and benefits via phone or in-person.
• Provides information on WIC benefits and the Farmer’s Market Nutrition Program.
• Attends conferences, seminars, in-service trainings, and mandatory trainings, completing yearly continuing education credits.
• Participates in breastfeeding promotion and support activities.
• Participates in nutrition education activities to promote WIC enrollment.
• Assists in compiling or developing educational materials for nutrition education sessions or group classes.
• Assists in developing or updating the local agency Nutrition Education and Outreach plan.
• Utilizes language line for participants requiring translation services.
• Performs other related duties as required.

Requirements

• Ability to perform tasks in a timely manner and follow instructions.
• Ability to work flexible schedules, accommodating rotation to different WIC sites based on program needs.
• Demonstrates strong organizational, interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
• Strong computer skills with knowledge of Microsoft Windows.
• Experience with data entry preferred.
