About the Role

The School Counsellor is responsible for providing support to students within the South Shore Regional Centre for Education. The Teacher will work within the Inclusive Education Policy framework by participating in individualized program planning with school staff and families to maximize learning experiences for students.

Responsibilities

• Participate in individualized program planning with school staff and families.
• Promote and maintain confidentiality regarding records and documentation.
• Collaborate with school and inter-agency teams to support early intervention strategies, coordination of services, problem solving and program planning.
• Develop, implement, and monitor individualized programs and teaching strategies based on individual student needs.
• Employ non-violent crisis intervention techniques.
• Demonstrate teaching strategies and coach school staff as needed.
• Maintain and promote confidentiality as the norm.
• Plan and develop training and professional learning opportunities related to students with behaviors of concern.
• Value the voice and contribution of others while remaining open to corrective criticism.

Requirements

• Valid NS teaching license.
• Elementary or Secondary Endorsement.
• Master’s degree in Counselling, Counselling Psychology, or equivalent.
• Demonstrated proficiency with the CCPA Code of Ethics and Standard of Practice.
• Understanding of the MTSS Framework and supporting the Tiers of Intervention.
• Understanding of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and Culturally Responsive Pedagogy (CRP).
• Proven ability to work as a contributing member of Student Planning Teams and Teaching Support Teams.
• Excellent communication (written, oral, and electronic), problem solving, organization, and interpersonal skills.
• Demonstrated ability to work and communicate effectively with students, teachers, parents, community members, and outside agencies.
• Current knowledge of developmental trauma, its impact on learning, communication, and social engagement.
• Ability to apply training and experience to develop, implement, and monitor individualized programs and teaching strategies.
• Ability to employ non-violent crisis intervention techniques.
• Ability to demonstrate teaching strategies and coach school staff.
• Experience in planning and developing training and professional learning opportunities related to students with behaviors of concern.
• Proven ability to communicate and work alongside diverse cultural and racial backgrounds.
• Provide a satisfactory Child Abuse Register Check and Criminal Record / Vulnerable Sector Checks.
