About the Role

Vapi is building voice agents that can resolve customer issues without transfers. This role focuses on the stability and pluggability of the StreamModule pipeline, ensuring low latency and enabling the addition of new models and providers.

Responsibilities

• Own pipeline stability and pluggability.
• Consolidate BullMQ into Kafka.
• Harden provider abstractions (LLM, STT, TTS base classes).
• Instrument the pipeline with event-driven OTEL tracing.
• Shore up Postgres SPOFs.
• Ramp on the StreamModule pipeline and backpressure model.
• Walk through past incidents.
• Land a scoped pipeline or provider-abstraction improvement.
• Own a slice of the BullMQ to Kafka consolidation.
• Ship event-driven OTEL instrumentation for at least one critical pipeline stage.
• Harden one provider plugin path.
• Drive a measurable reliability or latency win on the call path.
• Act as the backend owner for design reviews on new providers and pipeline changes.

Requirements

• Built real-time or streaming systems in production.
• Debugged a backpressure cascade.
• Experience with queue architecture (BullMQ, Kafka, Temporal).
• Built plugin or adapter architectures.
• Operated Postgres at scale (connection pooling, read replicas, schema migrations).
• Instrumented with OpenTelemetry and think in event-driven traces.
