About the Role
As Senior Legal Counsel, you will support diverse commercial matters, focusing on growth across the APJ region, particularly Japan. You will structure, negotiate, and close contracts, build scalable processes, and handle direct and partner negotiations, including privacy and security topics. This role requires excellent communication skills, attention to detail, a passion for technology, and problem-solving abilities in a fast-paced environment.
Responsibilities
- Draft, review, and negotiate SaaS contracts and other commercial agreements.
- Support and coach sales teams on deal structure, contract negotiations, and customer contract disputes.
- Analyze and advise internal stakeholders on contract risks in the APJ regions, considering commercial, partner, and privacy commitments.
- Act as a central point of contact for new and updated agreement templates, including Japanese form agreements.
- Partner with Contract Managers and Deal Desk to drive agreement execution and serve as an escalation point.
- Partner with Privacy Legal to standardize responses to global privacy regulations, especially in Japan.
- Work closely with Partner sales and business teams to grow business through partners.
- Serve as a trusted advisor by providing practical guidance that balances business objectives and legal risk.
- Gain an understanding of New Relic’s SaaS business, product-led growth strategy, and consumption-based model.
- Stay informed about evolving technology, buying programs, and relevant laws.
- Stay at the forefront of legal issues, leveraging AI as a work tool, negotiating AI terms, and monitoring regulatory frameworks.
- Review and advise marketing and procurement teams on miscellaneous Japanese commercial contracts.
- Drive operational excellence by developing processes, workflows, templates, and playbooks.
- Support company initiatives, including new product launches, monetization, special projects, and internal team enablement.
Requirements
- Japanese qualified attorney with 5 - 7 years of post-qualification experience.
- Experience in an English-speaking jurisdiction.
- Experience negotiating commercial contracts with a solid knowledge of technology, contract law, and revenue recognition principles.
- Fluent English speaker with high-level written English skills.
- Proficiency negotiating topics such as artificial intelligence, privacy, security, and data protection.
- Strategic, hands-on approach to supporting Sales’ deals in the APJ region.
- Experience negotiating and advising on partner contracts (e.g., resellers, global system integrators).
- Ability to work independently, prioritize multiple deliverables, manage expectations, and meet deadlines.
- Outstanding interpersonal skills and ability to coordinate effectively and gain trust at various levels.
- Ability to work as a team member in a scalable, autonomous, and accountable manner, demonstrating flexibility across matter types and time zones.
- Attention to detail and excellence in contract drafting and dispute management.
- Ability to communicate precisely and effectively with various teams and customers.
- Eagerness to contribute wherever help is needed.

- Criminal background check is required.
- Compliance with applicable law, including the San Francisco Fair Chance Ordinance, for arrest and conviction records.
- Export compliance assessment may be required for certain roles.
