About the Role

The Maintenance Technician position is a hands-on role providing technical expertise for the maintenance, repair, and preventive maintenance of facility equipment, including machinery, buildings, and various systems, to minimize downtime and enhance operational efficiency within a validated, cGMP environment. This role also involves managing shop tools, inventory, updating the CMMS, and adhering to Lean and 5S principles. Support for after-hours emergency response and assistance with parts inventory systems are also key responsibilities. Depending on the modality, this role may require significant physical strength and endurance.

Responsibilities

  • Performs technical troubleshooting on a variety of modalities, technologies, and locations.
  • Performs regularly scheduled preventative maintenance on high volume, validated processing equipment.
  • Reviews preventative maintenance tasks for effectiveness and frequency, recommending continuous improvement changes or Lean practices.
  • Optimizes processing and reduces downtime by performing predictive and preventative maintenance on equipment, machinery, and facility buildings.
  • Participates in the installation of new equipment.
  • Maintains electrical systems, including facility lighting, by installing and repairing wiring and fixtures.
  • Performs general maintenance tasks, including landscaping, painting, and carpentry.
  • Conducts daily, weekly, quarterly, and semi-annual safety/maintenance inspections.
  • Completes related paperwork accurately to Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) standards.
  • Adheres to all safety procedures, including Lock-Out/Tag-Out (LOTO), following Safety Data Sheets (SDS), and complying with environmental requirements for waste and disposal.
  • Completes shift work in a timely manner.
  • Responds to off-shift maintenance calls on a 24-hour rotating on-call basis.
  • Maintains a spare parts program, and either repairs parts or defers action for supervisor decision.
  • Maintains building climate by installing, repairing, servicing, or performing preventative maintenance on HVAC systems.
  • Analyzes new or alternative ways to improve operations.
  • Monitors production efficiency.
  • Incorporates staff recommendations into analysis.
  • Responds to audit activities constructively and uses findings to improve operations.
  • Maintains mechanical and technical skills, knowledge, and abilities by attending workshops, reviewing trade publications, and participating in training.
  • Trains others to conduct minor, basic repairs to equipment and machinery.
  • Completes necessary certification and re-certification requirements.
  • Contributes in a team effort by performing in accordance with STERIS policies, GMP, Lean principles, and other directives.
  • Supports the directives and decisions of higher-level management.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 2 years of related experience in positions demonstrating knowledge of maintenance systems, mechanical processes, and production output in a manufacturing/industrial/military environment.
  • Ability to effectively read, write, and verbally communicate in English.
  • Ability to work independently under general guidelines and supervision.
  • Requires computer literacy including word processing, spreadsheet, email, calendar, virtual platforms, and computerized maintenance management systems.
  • Requires effective interpersonal skills.
  • Requires average organizing and analyzing skills.
  • Requires a minimum of Level 2 math skills (ratios, basic algebra) to determine organizational customer and regulatory problems and formulate corrective action plans.
  • May require PLC/control experience.
  • Able to adapt to changing duties and responsibilities.
  • Requires working knowledge of pneumatics, hydraulics, mechanics, or electrical applications.
  • Requires ability to read blueprints and schematics.
  • Normal hearing range sufficient to hear alarms, bells, horns, etc.
  • Ability to meet physical requirements of position, including physical capacity evaluation testing and annual physical, as appropriate.
  • Ability to successfully complete Operator training (classroom and hands-on) to become a certified Operator and successfully pass Operator re-certification test annually.
