About the Role

Mary McDowell Friends School (MMFS) seeks a full-time Lower School Head Music Teacher to begin August 2026. This role involves overseeing student well-being, fostering educational and social-emotional growth, and designing a curriculum for students with learning disabilities, integrating Quaker values into all aspects of work.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the safety and wellbeing of students in advisory, content area classes, core classrooms, and homeroom classes.
  • Monitor and stimulate educational and social-emotional growth within the school's mission framework.
  • Design a challenging, creative, and developmentally appropriate curriculum for students with learning disabilities.
  • Integrate Quaker beliefs, testimonies, and practices in all interactions.
  • Coach and collaborate with associate teachers on curriculum development, student management, and family engagement.
  • Act as the advocate for students, supporting their relationships with teachers and serving as the primary contact for families.
  • Order necessary supplies within the provided budget.
  • Notify facilities of any repair or furniture needs for the classroom.
  • Structure the classroom to facilitate easy material location and comfortable sharing.
  • Straighten the classroom at the end of the day to aid custodians.
  • Participate in CSE reviews and meetings.
  • Testify at Impartial Hearings.
  • Collaborate with division directors, speech and language professionals, OT's, and counseling team members to address student needs.
  • Work with other teachers and administrators on school program development, evaluation, and revision.
  • Support, evaluate, and plan assignments with teaching partners.
  • Meet regularly with supervisor to discuss curriculum and student progress.
  • Schedule regular meetings with associate teachers.
  • Attend weekly division meetings.
  • Attend full faculty meetings.
  • Participate in school-wide or division-based committees and ad hoc committees.
  • Participate in team meetings regarding students and their needs.
  • Understand and participate in all school-wide diversity and equity initiatives.
  • Examine leadership practice through the lens of race, identity, equity, and privilege.
  • Provide an equitable framework for leadership decisions.
  • Support a school culture that welcomes diverse social identities.
  • Communicate with all community members politely, thoughtfully, and honestly.
  • Write, edit, and submit semester and quarterly trimester reports and grades.
  • Communicate with parents and guardians regarding student needs and progress via email, notes, phone calls, and meetings.
  • Communicate with outside therapists, tutors, and other professionals working with students.
  • Complete and submit recommendations, evaluations, and other requests for student information.
  • Ensure clear communication with families, psychologists, therapists, and other outside providers, seeking support when necessary.
  • Plan for and participate in parent-teacher conferences.
  • Act with integrity and address conflicts professionally.
  • Familiarize with faculty handbook and employment manuals, meeting outlined expectations.
  • Chaperone day-long and overnight school trips.

Requirements

  • MA required in special education.
  • Ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively with all levels of employees, management, and external agencies.
  • Willingness to learn and adapt to a new environment.
  • Ability to maintain the physical capacity required to navigate the school environment and ensure student safety.
  • Ability to open filing cabinets and bend or stand for long periods of time.
  • Ability to ascend/descend stairs to reach different rooms in the building (one to five flights).

Skills

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and G Suite applications.
  • Experience in special education, private sector, or Independent School or Public School system is a plus.

  • $70,000–$85,000, with the potential to reach $115,000
