About the Role
KXAN is seeking a Multimedia Journalist to cover education in Central Texas, producing content for all platforms with clarity and depth.
Responsibilities
- Produce, report, shoot, write, voice, and edit news content for all platforms.
- Embody KXAN’s in-depth brand by providing context, clarity, and deeper understanding.
- Report news stories for broadcast, describing background and details of events.
- Arrange interviews with knowledgeable sources.
- Review and correct copy for content, grammar, and punctuation.
- Evaluate notes to isolate pertinent facts and details.
- Determine story emphasis, length, and format, organizing material accordingly.
- Research and analyze background information for complete and accurate reporting.
- Gather information through research, interviews, experience, or attendance at events.
- Pitch relevant story ideas to news managers and producers.
- Evaluate leads and tips to develop story ideas.
- Discuss issues with producers and/or news managers to establish priorities.
- Check reference materials for relevant facts.
- Revise work to meet editorial approval or time requirements.
- Shoot and edit video of news events and reports.
- Ensure all content meets company standards for journalistic integrity and production quality.
- Write stories for the web and other eMedia platforms.
- Interact with viewers/users on social media sites.
- Perform special projects and other assigned duties.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Broadcast Journalism, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and work-related experience.
- Fluency in English.
- Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
- Ability to ad lib when required.
- Minimum two years’ experience in news reporting (Depending on market size).
- Education reporting experience preferred.
- Superior on-air presence.
- Proficiency with computers, telephones, copiers, scanners, fax machines and other office equipment.
- Ability to meet deadlines, prioritize assignments, and handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Valid driver’s license with a good driving record.
- Flexibility to work any shift.
