About the Role
Members of Technical Staff (MTS) are senior engineers who build the core platform at Beacon. You will own a piece of the core stack end-to-end, including design, implementation, and operations, shaping the long-term technical direction. This role is equivalent to a Staff Engineer, emphasizing systems engineering for multi-tenant data infrastructure, event-driven pipelines, and service architectures. The platform's solidity is critical for all other Beacon operations.
Responsibilities
- Own one of the following areas end-to-end: Data platform, Core services and APIs, Multi-tenant isolation, Workflow and action runtime, Observability and evals, or Safety and blast radius.
- Design, implement, and operate a piece of the core platform stack.
- Shape the long-term technical direction of your area.
- Build systems that real businesses depend on.
- Design APIs and SDKs for other engineers to build upon.
- Implement ML and agentic systems on a solid foundation.
- Ensure correctness, latency, and observability of core services.
- Manage per-portco data, compute, and credential boundaries.
- Develop the execution layer for operational workflows.
- Build observability tools including traces, metrics, and structured logs.
- Design autonomy tiers, kill switches, and audit surfaces for safety.
Requirements
- Senior engineering depth, Staff or principal-equivalent.
- Experience building and operating systems that real businesses depend on.
- Proficiency in at least one of Python, Go, Rust, or TypeScript, with the ability to work in any of them.
- Experience with distributed systems, including idempotency, partial failure, retry semantics, eventual consistency, schema evolution, and multi-tenant isolation.
- Experience building or operating non-trivial systems on a modern data stack (e.g., Kafka, Spark, dbt, Iceberg, Snowflake, Databricks, BigQuery).
- Understanding of the difference between a data warehouse and a data lake.
- A platform mindset, building for other engineers and prioritizing developer experience.
- Comfort with ambiguity and making decisions with long-term implications.
- Ability to read ML papers, build infrastructure around models, and form informed opinions on ML's role in the stack.
- Prior Staff or Principal Engineer experience at a high-bar engineering organization is a plus.
- Experience with Iceberg, Polaris, Snowflake, or Databricks at scale is a plus.
- Multi-tenant SaaS or platform infrastructure background is a plus.
- Production experience with LLM-driven systems, including evals and observability, is a plus.
- Background in offline RL, contextual bandits, or sequential decision-making is a plus.
- Open-source contributions to data infrastructure, observability, or developer tooling projects is a plus.
