About the Role
Youthdale is seeking an Awake Overnight Child & Youth Counsellor for their 592 Huron Live-In Treatment Program. This role involves providing supervision and ensuring the emotional and physical safety of youth residing in the program during overnight shifts.
Responsibilities
- Promote a safe and therapeutic environment and establish therapeutic relationships with clients through role modeling.
- Assess and understand client mental health needs through a developmental and trauma-informed lens and formulate intervention methods.
- Maintain records as per agency standards and in accordance with privacy policies and legislation.
- Utilize communication systems effectively to convey client and program-related information.
- Review the overnight checklist with front-line staff at the beginning of each shift.
- Complete Inspection Sheets every 15 minutes after each room inspection, confirming client presence in bed.
- Make notes if a child is awake, restless, or leaves their room.
- Awaken front-line staff if a client requires support for emotional, medical, or physical distress, or is not in their room during a check.
- Sit at the end of the hall to complete notes when not conducting room/property checks.
- Answer the phone and take messages.
- Complete a property walk-through every hour if the fire alarm system is not operational.
- Debrief client status to front-line staff in the morning before their departure.
- Participate actively in team meetings.
- Participate in ongoing training and supervision sessions regularly.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Diploma in Child and Youth Work, Social Work, or equivalent.
- One year of relevant experience working with youth, preferably in a live-in program setting.
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience with at-risk adolescents and young adults.
- Appreciation of the importance of engaging youth and families from a strengths-based, relationship-based approach.
- Sensitivity and ability to work with a diverse client and staff group.
- Ability to exercise professionalism and sound judgment in conflictual and stressful situations.
- Ability to work independently and effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
- Strong administrative and organizational skills.
- Valid First Aid/CPR and SMG certification.
- Completion of required suicide prevention and intervention training.
