About the Role

You’ll own the backend and platform development of Better Auth Infrastructure for both cloud-hosted and self-hosted deployments. This involves designing and shipping new platform capabilities, enhancing system reliability and performance, and establishing deployment, observability, and compliance foundations for enterprise customers. Your focus will be on APIs, runtime architecture, data systems, event pipelines, edge/serverless services, and deployment models. You will collaborate with product and dashboard teams, with a core responsibility for the underlying infrastructure. You will help define future development, operational strategies, and packaging for self-hosted solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Design and ship new backend and platform capabilities across the infrastructure layer, including API design, service boundaries, data flows, analytics pipelines, and internal platform tooling.
  • Enhance platform scalability and performance to handle increased load reliably, identifying and addressing bottlenecks proactively.
  • Own the platform's reliability posture through monitoring, alerting, graceful degradation, incident response, and operational discipline.
  • Improve the hosted platform's operations and design packaging and operational models for self-hosted deployments, focusing on containers, upgrade paths, and production operability.
  • Implement security controls, audit trails, and data handling practices required for SOC 2 and enterprise customers.

Requirements

  • 7+ years of software engineering experience.
  • Strong TypeScript proficiency.
  • Deep backend or infrastructure experience.
  • Experience designing APIs, modeling data, and shipping systems that handle production load.
  • Experience designing and operating systems in edge or serverless environments.
  • Experience with containerizing production services and building or operating deployment workflows.
  • Familiarity with authentication concepts such as session management, token handling, access control, and common vulnerabilities.
  • Understanding of SOC 2 requirements at the implementation level, including controls, audit logging, and data handling practices.
  • Ability to scope technical work from a product direction and manage it from design through production.
  • Experience with distributed systems, including async pipelines, event-driven systems, or multi-service architectures.
  • Experience building multi-tenant SaaS products and understanding data isolation and permissioning challenges (Bonus).
  • Familiarity with enterprise identity standards like SSO, SAML, OIDC, SCIM (Bonus).
  • Experience with Kubernetes or similar orchestration systems, particularly for self-hosted or enterprise deployments (Bonus).

About the Company

  • Better Auth is the most comprehensive authentication framework for TypeScript.
  • We're the most upvoted YC Launch in history and are used by thousands of developers shipping everything from startup projects to enterprise products.
  • We’re a small team building foundational infrastructure that other developers depend on, so the bar is high: every decision we make affects security, correctness, and developer experience at scale.
  • We’re also building an enterprise layer on top of the open-source framework for teams that need more operational, organizational, and compliance-oriented capabilities.

Equal Opportunity

  • Better Auth is an equal opportunity employer. We believe diverse teams build better security infrastructure.
