About the Role

As a Principal Fire Engineer/Technical Lead, you will be responsible for the consistent and timely delivery of complex design projects, driving technical and commercial contributions, developing client relationships, and identifying new business opportunities. This role involves providing a high level of service across all fire engineering sectors, managing projects from inception to completion.

Responsibilities

  • Working across a variety of projects independently and as part of a wider team
  • Providing continuous high-quality fire engineering services
  • Keeping abreast of market trends and identifying future developing work streams
  • Providing advisory support and carrying out site visits during the construction stage
  • Preparing technical engineering analysis such as CFD modelling, structural fire engineering, etc. using programs such as FDS/PyroSim, Pathfinder, SAFIR, B-Risk, etc.
  • Conducting Fire Risk Assessments, Technical Report Writing, and Third-party review/design verification
  • Having a clear understanding of fire safety issues and providing well-supported fire-engineered solutions
  • Negotiating and influencing internal and external parties on design concepts
  • Identifying solutions to correct problems
  • Engaging in strategic, creative, and analytical thinking to solve project and non-project issues
  • Seeking out skills in others to support problem-solving and team development
  • Helping the team develop efficiencies in work delivery and staying at the forefront of the industry technically
  • Understanding relevant legislation and design guidance such as Approved Document B (ADB), BS 9999, BS 9991, BS 9992, BS 7974, BS 5839, BS EN 12845 and BS EN 15004
  • Preparing/reviewing fee proposals
  • Ensuring SYSTRA UK&I systems and policies are followed and assisting with their development
  • Maintaining records to ensure company Quality Procedures, service levels, and contractual requirements are met
  • Leading and directing a team through the knowledge and application of standards and procedures
  • Contributing to sustainable development and the evolution of the fire engineering discipline
  • Supporting the wider business on the latest fire safety standards, regulations, and best practices
  • Demonstrating behaviors aligned with SYSTRA’s behavioural framework
  • Actively fostering a culture of excellence, collaboration, respect, and empowerment
  • Maintaining and managing strong client relationships
  • Identifying business development opportunities
  • Interacting with architecture and wider multi-discipline colleagues to produce collaborative design solutions
  • Interfacing with external parties including Local Fire Authorities, Project Client Teams, Contractors, Statutory Authorities, Local Planning Authorities, and Supply chain partners
  • Recruiting, onboarding, developing, performance managing, and retaining team members
  • Communicating business updates, strategic objectives, and key information to the team
  • Ensuring full compliance with people policies and procedures
  • Proactively managing people-related risks
  • Creating and maintaining a working environment where SYSTRA’s behavioural expectations are recognised and demonstrated
  • Role-modelling SYSTRA behaviours, recognising and celebrating team members, providing constructive feedback, and fostering a supportive environment

Requirements
