About the Role

HOK is seeking a leader to promote design excellence on all Interiors projects by providing overall practice leadership through skills in interior design and management, business development, and staff development. This role is a member of the regional Practice management team.

Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic vision and day-to-day administration of the Interiors group.
  • Responsible for development and execution of practice goals, business plan, and profitability, aligning with regional and firm-wide plans.
  • Ensure Integrated Sustainable Design solutions are incorporated into projects.
  • Supervise the production of drawings and documents that convey design intent.
  • Oversee design quality control on all projects and implement HOK Standards.
  • Develop and/or review fee proposals and workload projections.
  • Work closely with project managers on budget and schedule constraints and identify opportunities to support project profitability.
  • Utilize and encourage best uses of design technology for presentation and production, championing BIM and Revit.
  • Oversee the project team in documenting the design from vision sessions through production.
  • Maintain appropriate billable and non-billable personal and departmental time.
  • Ensure availability of adequate staff for contracted projects.
  • Oversee those who conduct project technical and design reviews.
  • Oversee and ensure implementation of construction details, contract documents, and post-occupancy project support.
  • Understand and enforce conditions of client contract, mindful of additional services opportunities.
  • Foster collaborative professional working relationships with management and project team members.
  • Foster a commitment to external and internal client service.
  • Responsible for the development and execution of marketing strategy, branding, and development of HOK’s Interiors practice.
  • Identify new business opportunities and develop current client relationships.
  • Participate in selected marketing and business development opportunities, acting as a key presenter in new project interviews.
  • Develop and nurture positive client, consultant, contractor, and jurisdictional relationships.
  • Assist marketing department in developing marketing campaigns, materials, webinars, and proposal preparation.
  • Provide oversight to marketing staff in developing standard materials describing the design portfolio, systems, and processes.
  • Assist in preparation of award submittals, press releases, and other publicity materials.
  • Work closely with Director, Interior Design to ensure design intent is carried throughout all projects.
  • Conduct research to understand client needs for project requirements and design solution opportunities.
  • Utilize knowledge of furniture, fixtures, finishes, lighting, art, signage, color, and materials to support staff.
  • Stay connected with manufacturers and the design industry for innovative products and services.
  • Engage clients in explorations that challenge their understanding of appropriate design solutions.
  • Communicate design intent clearly and compellingly, demonstrating incorporation of client requirements and goals.
  • Oversee preparation and delivery of design presentations and drive consultant work.
  • Lead ongoing design dialogue within the Interiors Practice.
  • Act as a mentor by coaching and motivating design teams and individuals.
  • Prepare, deliver, and ensure completion of staff evaluations; responsible for performance development, compensation, and workload allocation.
  • Support diversity and develop continuing education opportunities to stimulate creativity and innovation.
  • Participate in interviews and recruiting of professional staff.
  • Encourage staff exploration and innovation for project design excellence and continual improvement.
  • In smaller offices, may take on roles of Director of Interior Design and/or Director of Operations.
  • Participate in local or state professional associations and attend conferences.
  • Participate with other Directors of Interiors in firm-wide activities and may serve on the HOK Design Board.
  • Take personal responsibility for fostering a green workplace through sustainable work practices.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in interior design or architecture required.
  • Master’s degree preferred.
  • 15 plus years’ experience with large interiors or architectural firm or division.
  • 10 plus years as senior level Interior Designer responsible for design and project management of interiors.
  • Supervisory experience required.
  • Published and/or award winning projects a plus.
  • Must be a professional Interior Designer and have passed the NCIDQ exam or be a registered Architect with current license.
  • If registered Architect, NCARB registration preferred.
  • LEED credential required within 12 months of employment.

  • $185,000 to $220,000
  • Discretionary bonus
