Responsibilities

  • Perform a broad range of operational building control and maintenance services.
  • Act in a leadership role in the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, testing, calibrating, commissioning, and repair of plant components, including building control systems, energy management control systems, central monitoring stations, control programming, control panels, heat pumps, actuators, sensors, motors, IT cable, valves, ventilation measurements, compressors, humidification equipment, heating plant alarm systems, pumps, filters, security systems, fire alarm systems, and other HVAC machinery.
  • Program and commission DDC systems for efficient operation of building systems.
  • Assist in the planning and coordination of building or capital improvement projects.
  • Determine material quantities and work time for upgrades, installations, repairs, and projects to ensure accurate cost and schedule estimating.
  • Provide emergency response and corrective action for urgent building problems.
  • Ensure all work is performed according to standard practices, design specifications, and provincial and local building codes.
  • Provide technical guidance and advice to skilled trades in the operation of building systems.
  • Respond to and take corrective action for urgent building operational items, indoor air quality, thermal comfort parameters, and environmental issues.
  • Maintain appropriate records, including equipment repair history, work orders, daily job cards, vehicle records, and test reports.
  • Ensure sufficient materials and correct replacement parts are available, initiate ordering, and stock vehicles with regular inventory recording.
  • Make recommendations and determine quantities and work time for proposed upgrades, installations, repairs, and projects to assist with proper costing.
  • Liaise with consultants, contractors, inspectors, suppliers, and other departments on maintenance and project work.
  • Complete and document work orders prior to submission to the manager.
  • Provide written reports on inspections and/or tests and make recommendations to improve performance.
  • Perform duties in compliance with school, Operations Department, and Board policies and procedures, including occupational health, safety, attendance, work routines, WHMIS, evacuation plans, and the laws of Nova Scotia.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Certificate or diploma in Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning from a recognized institution.
  • Experience operating computerized HVAC controls.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with other trades, custodial staff, and school administration.
  • Nova Scotia Driver's License.
  • Completion of WHMIS, First Aid & CPR, or willingness to obtain.
