About the Role

The Region Safety Director is a key regional leader responsible for advancing enterprise safety performance, regulatory compliance, and operational excellence. This role provides strategic direction and executive oversight for safety and training programs, audits, investigations, compliance execution, and performance management to mitigate risk, strengthen accountability, and embed a high-performing safety culture.

Responsibilities

• Serve as the expert in Occupational Health and Safety (OSHA), Federal Transit Administration (FTA), Department of Transportation (DOT), Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), California Highway Patrol (CHP) rules and regulations.
• Oversee internal and external audits and inspections, including those conducted by the company, client staff, and regulatory agencies.
• Analyze internal safety audits and accident statistical data, tracking compliance of corrective actions.
• Ensure timely and accurate investigation and documentation of all accidents/incidents.
• Prepare risk assessments, system safety assessments, and root cause analyses.
• Ensure security awareness and training is conducted in the region for risk identification, assessment, and elimination.
• Monitor location activity to ensure record keeping and reporting requirements are met.
• Ensure safety and training manuals, programs, policies, and procedures are current and adhered to.
• Provide supervision and leadership for discipline related to safety issues.
• Represent the company in grievance procedures for safety-related issues.
• Address human resource issues promptly and appropriately, emphasizing corrective actions.
• Oversee corporate and local safety incentives, ensuring effective and consistent program management.
• Leverage telematics data to analyze accident/near-miss causes, identify risk trends, and develop mitigation plans.
• Oversee the region's system safety program and ensure compliance with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration requirements.
• Establish a management cadence of safety performance reviews, providing recommended strategies and solutions for improvements.
• Coordinate with executive, management, operations, and maintenance leadership to craft and execute strategies that build a culture of safety.
• Foster a positive safety culture throughout divisions, emphasizing teamwork and individual responsibility.
• Mentor management personnel in safety management practices, procedures, and protocols.
• Assist in directing the recruitment, training, discipline, and promotion of Safety personnel.
• Maintain awareness of internal and industry-wide safety trends, developments, and best practices.
• Coordinate with the Risk Management team on risk reporting and requirements for Workers Compensation, General Liability, and Vehicle Auto-Liability.
• Provide support to the Chief Safety Officer or respective RVP of Operations as directed.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent knowledge in occupational health, safety, training, and transportation.
• Five (5) years of management experience in a safety and/or training role overseeing multiple locations.
• Five (5) years of experience in Workplace Safety (OSHA).
• Five (5) years of experience in Transportation Compliance (DOT).
• Experience with defensive driving programs.
• Experience working with a unionized workforce preferred.
• Handle sensitive and confidential information appropriately.
• Effective organizational, analytical, confidentiality, quantitative, multi-tasking, and time management skills.
• Aptitude for leadership and influence within a matrix organization structure.
• Ability to effectively delegate tasks and provide appropriate supervision and follow-up.
• Ability to analyze, define, diagnose, and resolve problems based on sound logic and rationale.
• Strong leadership skills with the ability to set clear expectations, coach, develop, and motivate staff.
• Attention to detail and thorough reporting/documentation skills.
• Excellent communication and presentation skills with an ability to influence people at all levels.

• Intermediate level use of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint) and other Windows-based computer operating systems.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to read, write, and speak English.

• Ability to hold the respect and confidence of all employees.
• Ability to work independently and objectively.
• Knowledge of State and Federal regulations, including OSHA, DOT, FMCSA, EPA, ADA, CHP.
