About the Role

Analyze, design, and validate thermal control systems for spacecraft, ensuring optimal performance across various orbital regimes and mission phases. Contribute to the fast-paced design, build, and testing of Rendezvous and Proximity Operations (RPO) capable spacecraft.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, run, and maintain thermal models (GMM/TMM) of spacecraft, subsystems, and equipment.
  • Define hot, cold, and edge cases that drive the thermal design.
  • Correlate thermal models against test and flight data.
  • Support the design and sizing of active and passive thermal control solutions.
  • Translate analysis into practical hardware recommendations.
  • Execute hand calculations, spreadsheet models, and Python first-order analysis.
  • Conduct trade-off studies on thermal architecture, balancing performance against mass, power, cost, manufacturability, operational constraints, and schedule.
  • Present key assumptions, problems, results, and conclusions to guide design decisions.
  • Support and execute thermal testing of spacecraft and equipment.
  • Produce clear thermal analysis reports, design notes, verification evidence, and review material.
  • Support internal and external technical reviews.
  • Develop and maintain internal thermal analysis tools, material property databases, model templates, and post-processing workflows.
  • Guide the tools and processes the team uses to improve speed, consistency, and traceability.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's or higher in Mechanical, Aerospace, Space Systems, or related engineering discipline.
  • 2+ years delivering thermal analysis and design for space systems.
  • Hands-on experience developing and running thermal models using at least one industry-standard tool (e.g., Thermal Desktop, Systema/Thermica, ESATAN-TMS, NX Space Systems Thermal).
  • Understanding of the space environment and its drivers (beta angle, eclipse, seasonal variation, spacecraft attitude).
  • Ability to perform first-principles calculations and sanity checks.
  • Strong systems-thinking mindset with the ability to interface across disciplines.
  • Working knowledge of passive and active thermal control hardware, including selection criteria, sizing, and interface considerations.
