About the Role

Radical AI is seeking a Director of Software Engineering to build and lead the software engineering team during a period of rapid hiring and technical expansion. This is a player-coach role where you will ship code weekly while owning team growth, culture, processes, and technical direction. You will report to the President and Co-Founder and collaborate with science, hardware, and product stakeholders. The role requires stabilizing and growing a lean team, addressing significant architectural challenges for near-term customer deployments, and actively participating in technical problem-solving.

Responsibilities

Lead the software engineering team, including hiring, development, and retention.
Establish team rhythms such as standups, planning, retrospectives, and code review culture.
Serve as a technical mentor for engineers, supporting their professional and technical growth.
Conduct daily code reviews and submit 1-3 pull requests per week.
Drive and participate in architectural discussions and decisions.
Maintain technical fluency to debug production issues and evaluate proposals.
Build and own the long-term software development roadmap in partnership with co-founders and product teams.
Translate ambiguous business and scientific requirements into clear technical strategy.
Manage tradeoffs between speed, correctness, and scale in a dynamic environment.
Act as a credible technical voice in leadership discussions.
Interface effectively with product, science, and hardware stakeholders.

Requirements

10+ years of software engineering experience.
3+ years in an engineering management or technical lead role.
Still deeply hands-on: writes code, reviews code, and actively participates.
Strong systems thinking ability to design complex distributed systems under constraints.
Proven ability to establish processes that enhance team speed without creating bureaucracy.
Experience growing and stabilizing engineering teams in fast-moving environments.
Based in or willing to relocate to New York City.
Requires regular in-person presence with the team.
